The Boy Mayor’s Last Stand (Kucinich)

The Boy Mayor’s Last Stand
Kucinich Tries to Win Over New Set of Voters in Race Against Kaptur

http://www.rollcall.com/issues/57_97/boy_mayor_last_stand_dennis_kucinich_marcy_kaptur-212452-1.html

CLEVELAND — In his political lifespan, Rep. Dennis Kucinich traveled the globe to meet world leaders, crisscrossed the country to run for president and even flirted with running for re-election in Washington state.

But a much less glamorous locale will determine the Ohio Democrat’s fate next month: Toledo.

As the snow whips past his hybrid SUV on the two-hour drive from his home in Cleveland to Toledo on Saturday morning, it’s hard to imagine why anyone wants this job. But two Members — Kucinich and fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur — want to represent the redrawn 9th district, which stretches 120 miles along Lake Erie’s shoreline.

The new district’s numbers aren’t in Kucinich’s favor, but that’s never stopped the two-time failed presidential candidate from running before. Yet even the west Cleveland Congressman admits he’s not sure who will win the March 6 primary.

During all the times Dennis ran for President, my head always had me supporting others...Clark, Kerry, Obama... I would run into Kucinich supporters who would try to disuade me because they seemed to know, as I did, that my positions and beliefs were really with them. The idea of a Department of Peace, the uncompromising support for "single payer" and all the rest....Dennis stands with ordinary struggling people better than most.

My apologies to Marcy Kaptur and her supporters..but I don't want to see Dennis leave congress yet. We don't have enough strong voices and progressive champions who can make waves nationally like Dennis can. I know the constituants have to vote for the best representative for their district. I only hope they can see the record of how Dennis has on a national scale been a progressive champion--with a thorn in the side presence that we still need amidst all the "compromisers."

We had to say good-bye to Teddy Kennedy..now Barney Frank is leaving..I'm not ready to say goodbye to Dennis yet and his booming voice for the people.

both he and Kaptur are progressives. In my view, though, they have both been in politics, and in Congress too long. Kaptur has served 14 terms. Kucinich has served 8 terms. I'd like to see them both step aside in favor of new, younger blood. When does it stop? 17 terms? 11 terms? Do they both plan to be in Congress until they die?

I wonder if he'd have a better shot running there.
