A drunken Houston man shot himself in the head Thursday morning as he played with a gun in the parking lot of a local business, police said.
The mans name has not yet been released, but The Houston Chronicle noted that the shooting took place around 2:30 a.m.
Witnesses claimed he was showing off the gun, a revolver, before pointing it at his head and pulling the trigger several times. It did not fire.
Then the man apparently decided to tempt fate once more. Witnesses reportedly said he put the gun to his head for a fourth and final time, pulling the trigger and sending a bullet into his brain.

I applaud him actually, for two reasons; removing his defective DNA from the gene pool, and not taking anybody with him...

Answer, a drunken idiot playing with a gun.

(18,483 posts)...evolution at work. I guess some folks who think they're fine but can't actually hold their liquor will sometimes gun themselves down.

(950 posts)not as Darwin Award winning as the Houston man a decade ago who though it'd be a brilliant idea to play Russian roulette with a .45 pistol.
Yes, a pistol.
You can guess how that ended.

(18,483 posts)BTW, I used to work with a Russian guy, a programmer. He said what you see in the movies is Americanized Russian roulette. His story was that when political embarrassments occurred, six leaders would sit at a table and play roulette with a revolver loaded with 5 bullets. The survivor would deny any involvement with the problem situation.

(1,437 posts)the revolver didn't fire, would the rest of them shoot themselves in the head? I don't think I'd trust handing a gun to a guy I know will kill us all to be the survivor. heheh

(18,483 posts)...it was just Russian humor, but that may be how it happen. I wouldn't expect such a survivor to tell. One round and five empties seems more realistic but Viktor had an odd sense of humor.

(7,720 posts)The kind of gun owner you describe are a small minority of gun owners. Come on up to Minnesota, we're a solid Democratic state with gun owners who are not bubbas.

(13,324 posts)there are out there. Even if the vast majority at least relatively responsible - i.e. keeping their guns in a safe place and not brandishing them while intoxicated - the sheer number of firearms out there means a whole lot more of these incidents will happen.
Granted, I know that drastically reducing the number of guns which already exist in this country, is probably unrealistic. But further increasing said number is no solution at all.

(794 posts)Im sure this man didnt want to end up an idiotic drunken dead guy. When he was a child he may have had aspirations of being a state park warden or fireman. I'm sure the years and the failures piled-up to make that childhood dream an unattainable wish. Gun lifestyle pushers and drug pushers are the same way; they talk of the incredible power one feels when using their products and the manhood confirming honor it confirms on the owner. Mixing this kind of gun mindset with alcohol and family problems almost always results in the use of the gun for one thing or another. Maybe this poor man was going through a difficult point in his life and had been subject to gun lifestyle ideaology and trivialization. The drunken variation on russian roulette was a final scream for help- did the whitnesses just stand and watch without trrying to stop him kill himself?
So sad. So very very sad. life is an infinitely valuable commodity that should never be refused or misconstrued as an inconvenient short condition. I hope his loved ones are okay and able to learn from his mistakes
