Former New York Times restaurant critic and "pretty bad columnist" Frank Bruni has boldly turned against Paula Deen today. Back in 2011, Bruni wrote an opinion piece ("Unsavory Culinary Elitism" that went after Anthony Bourdain for talking shit about Paula Deen. At the time, Bourdain had recently told TV Guide "The worst, most dangerous person to America is clearly Paula Deen." "She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations," said Bourdain. "And she's proud of the fact that her food is fucking bad for you."
And today Bruni has completely changed his opinion of Paula Deen. In "Paula's Worst Ingredients," he just tears into her without ever mentioning that he was previously a Deen apologist. You get lines like: "Paula Deen is where sass meets crass, where the homespun and folksy curdle into something with a sour aftertaste." Bruni calls her pharma deal "triumphant cynicism." He says her "worst ingredient" is her "willful obtuseness."

(39,390 posts)And how great is Bourdain? I think my guts would explode if I ever traveled with him (if the hangovers didn't kill me first) but I love to watch.

(11,304 posts)enough. I don't know what else she can do. She has said she is sorry. I just don't think that we keep kicking a person down. Wheter you like her cooking or not I think its time to give her time to retreat and work her racism out on her own. Find something that will help her redeem herself. Everyone deserves a 2d chance. I think some like picking on her because she is old. Enough already. She has lost a lot of business.

(11,304 posts)you want a person to say she is sorry. I mean americans are better than that. What happened to accepting a person apology? She lost her show. Personnel I think she should get out of the media limelight and give people some time. But I don't believe in beating a person while the are already down. I don't like racist, period. But I believe in forgiving people. Hopefully she will find some way to bridge what she has said to help some in her minority community. I am not letting her off. I just think enough of the pilling on.

(11,304 posts)just don't believe in beating a person over and over until they are down and out already. Apparently you think differently.

(50,566 posts)She blamed "young people." WTF? Queen Deen doesn't think she has to to show respect for anyone because she sees herself as above those dark-skinned folks. She can take her millions and slink off to shovel butter into her mouth for the rest of her days. I'm not sorry for her at all.
When asked whether people find the n-word racist, Deen said, "I dont know, I have asked myself that so many times. I go into my kitchens and hear what these young people are calling each other. Its very distressing for me. I think for this problem to be worked on these young people are gonna have to take control and start showing respect for each other."

(5,946 posts)it seemed to me she did the victim apology tour - well you all are just picking on me.
I have yet to hear an acceptable apology for her -
for example - I should not have dismissed employees for complaining about my brother's sexual harassment, my poor choice in language, et al - what was accepted no longer is, I have learned.
instead we get - well if you never said anything wrong throw a rock at my head and kill me now.
plus she is carrying all that blatant commercialism with her diabetes plugs - but then they dropped her as well.
every time she says she is old and that is how people behave, I have to yell at the screen that I am older than her and know a lot better and I don't have a professional PR person working for me.
southernyankeebelle
(11,304 posts)down on the ground begging and begging for forgiveness. She made 2 clips of apologies. You may not have thought them sincere but it's up to the people who she hurt to forgive her. I just don't believe in over kill. Some people aren't happy unless they put her at the stake. I thing what she said is terrible but I also feel what is going on is overkill.

(9,494 posts)I don't need her to grovel, there is no "way back". There are better cooks and better products out there. Her name is tainted. I'm sure I can find someone to buy from who isn't a bigot.
southernyankeebelle
(11,304 posts)I think they are way over priced. But on the other hand I don't think companies should fire her either. She has a right to make a living. To me I'll never watch or buy her products. People should have that right that want to buy her products.
Walk away
(9,494 posts)especially if their contracts allow them to. What ever she did or said made her less marketable. Who in their right mind would advocate forcing a business to sell her crap if they don't want to.

(30,885 posts)I don't see this as "Paula Deen is being crucified for using the 'n-word,'" I see it as "enough is enough."
The irony of ironies is that Smithfield dropped her. She ducked the controversy over labor conditions, claiming that no one at Smithfield told her anything was wrong. Of course, she didn;t talk to the workers, she talked to the CEO, and I'm sure he had no complaints.
This is a matter of Paula Deen sucking as a human being.
She got voted off the island. Should have happened long ago. And, yes, I do not acknowledge her as a "real chef." DUers who know me know that I not only have a love affair with food photography ("food porn" , but I also fancy myself to be pretty capable in the kitchen. I've never prepared a Paula Deen recipe and never would.

(26,366 posts)CHICAGO -- Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson says he's agreed to help celebrity chef Paula Deen try to make amends for her past use of a racial slur, saying she shouldn't become a "sacrificial lamb" over the issue of racial intolerance.
Jackson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Deen called him this week, and they discussed how she might recover.

(2,939 posts)The first time she blew it was when she wtihheld the news of her diabetes for a couple of years while shilling the very things that contributed to the disease. Then she turned around & profited by pushing pharma. Time's up, Paula. Exit stage right.

(31,410 posts)about her unhealthy cooking by making a cutesy comment about
how someone must have peed in his cereal that morning. More mouthing
off from Paula...but no acknowledgement of the issue.
Turns out...after the fact...that she was diabetic at the time and hadn't
told her viewers/followers about it.
For my money, Paula's mouth has finally caught up with her. No regrets
at seeing her lose her empire. She's been pushing unhealthy cooking...for
her own profit...for a long time and ignoring the truth.

(50,566 posts)They want fat, they want butter, they want sugar, they want fried -- quantities be damned, moderation be damned -- and she gives it to them, and makes them feel good about it. No pesky, healthy "Food Police" for them, dammit, they're Amurikins and if they want to eat themselves to an early grave well, boy howdy, that's what Freedom is all about!

(30,253 posts)I have noticed that when someone reaches a certain level of success, there are always those who can't wait to tear them down.
I'm not a big fan of Deen and she appears to still not get it (her apologies were cringe worthy), but neither has she killed or maimed anyone.
The overreaction, mostly by the media, is becoming overkill and making her to be the underdog. That's why I think that her upcoming book has become the #1 best seller in Amazon. That's one way for people to express their support. They can't control the media nor the sponsors who have dropped her like a hot potato, but they can still buy her book.

(12,482 posts)I never even knew who Deen was until the "her own food is killing her" ironic shit from a while back.
Thought his No Reservations show was one of the bright spots in the vast wasteland of teevee. Haven't caught his new one on CNN .
So Bruni never even acknowledges Bourdain was right about this woman way back and he was wrong?
