Pelosi mulling John Lewis Voting Rights Act to overturn Supreme Court decision http://bit.ly/14wvs9r (Raw Story)
Former Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Wednesday that Congressional Democrats are planning new legislation to render ineffective Chief Justice John Roberts decision on Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, the historic 1965 legislation that guaranteed equal access to the vote for all Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity. According to The Hill, Pelosi is already considering naming the prospective bill after civil rights icon and Georgia Rep. John Lewis (D).
Its really a step backward, and its not a reflection of whats really happening in our country in some of these places, Pelosi said of Tuesdays decision, in which a 5-to-4 majority ruled that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. Section 4 established a metric for states that have discriminated racially in the past, qualifying them for Section 5, which mandates that these states receive clearance from the federal government before making changes to election law.
I would like to see something
called the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, she continued, saying that Congress could follow Chief Justice Roberts recommendation and re-write Section 4?s criteria.

(11,464 posts)and it so pained me months ago when people were calling him all sort of names when he didn't sign a petition against President Obama.
I back John Lewis and Elijah Cummings 100% of the time.

(7,759 posts)If the Court should not overturn the "will of the people" or elected officials concerning DOMA, then neither should the Court overturn the Court overturn the "will of the people" via their elected officials concerning the VRA. The research on the VRA that support keeping the VRA in tact was as current as 2006 when the necessary data was presented. Roberts is pretending that there needs to be more current data ...just because ...well really because Barak Obama was elected twice since 2006. The conservative justices who are always touted as being so cerebral are being disingenuous when they say more proof of voter adverse behavior is needed. They just want states like PA, OH, NJ to be able to more easily impose harsh voter ID laws.

(2,088 posts)but because they gerrymandered themselves into a victory and voter ID laws target voters that vote for Democrats, this is DOA, at least for now.
I hope to God I am wrong.

(23,182 posts)Repugs don't want minorities or young people to vote and are already in process of passing laws to prevent this. There's no way in the world that they will approve voting rights for all, that's exactly what their top priority is to prevent, not promote.
They are disgusting and anti-american, caring only about the 1%.
Big K/R!

(25,111 posts)neither. VRA and what the red states are doing right now is not being reported by our so called journalist. Pres O's climate change issue - hardly any coverage and now zippoo. Therefore, cable news report whats going on are extremely few. Even news stations around the country are saying nothing.
Again, the fight continues.

(4,510 posts)They'll gladly vote no and without Obama on the ticket again I'm afraid we've hit the high water mark for minority turnout. they'll suppress the vote and win elections and suppress more. We need this act to become law within the next 4 years or you can say goodbye to the Obama coalition.

(21,237 posts)They set up voting areas, register voters, and count the votes. The infrastructure is there. Hire past census workers to take over all aspects. States still control their state and local but voter rolls are controlled by the census voting bureau. No more electronic privately owned voting machines.
