We brought up the Snowden scandal to Rage Against the Machine's guitarist last night ... and he absolutely unloaded on the Obama administration, and recommended Snowden -- who's been charged with espionage and theft of government property -- never return to the U.S.
Morello explained, "I think he should live a happy life in Ecuador. That's what I think. I think he's a hero."
He added, "He exposed the crimes of the government. That we're all being spied on. all the time by the Obama administration? If anybody deserves to be in jail ... it's not Snowden."

(48,121 posts)I doubt Obama cares much about your phone records himself, but there a slew of private contractors and others who apparently can get access to things.
From something I posted earlier:
A thought about the NSA and phone records
NSA picks up info about some terror funding and arms in Afghanistan.
They start looking into the calls and find that a call was placed from there to somewhere in South America.
As they go through the calls and trace funding they end up....
With you talking to your friend.
Who was talking the day before with Janet because he wanted some weed.
She called her friend, who had a supply and from his calls they find another person up the chain....and people who never knew anyone in anyway have a call tree associating them with terrorist funding. Now they can get a plethora of warrants to listen and research more.
Map out everything you can in some way or other and you can find a way to show cause to get info on someone that you don't like.
Well, you get the idea.

I keep asking someone to explain to me why they think this explanation makes one iota of sense, but it's the ONLY defense they've offered. It is stupid to try to find a number this way, so stupid that no person in their right mind could accept it as a justification for 'collecting and storing' records.

They might like some of our allied countries, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain where people's rights are unimportant and the state can spy on its people all they want and journalists have to 'watch what they say'. If this is what they want, why are they still here?

Snowden exposed what we pretty much already knew but he confirmed it with the govt's own documentation. It sucks that our government doesn't trust it's own taxpayers. So some of my tax money goes to spy on me? That's BS. So screw them. I think it's hilarious that Snowden is one step ahead of the Feds. And I'm glad they are frustrated.

Obama doesn't have to worry about getting elected again. We've got him 'till 2016. But Dems have to worry about not getting totally routed in 2014. Now, Tarheel_Dem, look once again at that shrinking "base", and at the flak Obama's mindless defenders, like you, have on a massive Dem board like DU.
If you had any sense, you'd notice that a huge percentage of Dems are in utter shock. There's a split in the community, just at the time where there's a growing understanding. But people like you, who claim to represent Obama's "base", are rallying around a cry to prosecute truth-tellers for treason, to suppress the facts of how the US is governed and ordered and ruled, and to reduce US politics to the Obama family vs the Kardishians as to which is more lovable.

I have friends from Ecuador. They know their country is in transition from decades of corruption resulting from outside influences from the West. Huge Global Corps backed the worst and most dishonest 'leaders' in that region of the world. But now the people have begun the process of reversing those disastrous policies. It will take time, the corrupt are still there, unhappy with the wonderful changes that have so benefited their people but they are now out of power and hopefully it will stay that way.

I saw Tom Morello on Bill Moyers a few months ago and he was great. I had never heard of him b/c I'm not a pop music follower (or whatever the genre is you'd put him in), but I was aware of RATM in general, and listening to him & Moyers converse was wonderful. Morello walks the talk.
