The Supreme Court struck down a central portion of the Voting Rights Act Tuesday, effectively ending the practice in which some states with a history of racial discrimination must receive clearance from the federal government before changing voting laws.
The vote was five to four, with the five conservative-leaning judges in the majority and the four liberal-leaning justices in the minority. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote the decision.

Two years ago, African Americans, lower-income Americans, and young Americans participated in the 2008 presidential election in historic numbers. This November, however, these groups largely stayed home, as did most Americans.

"Most Americans stayed home."
The wingnuts didn't. End of story.
Its going to take constant effort to ensure that everyone who wants to actually gets to vote out every last damn Republican in Congress.

(32,001 posts)What is really important now is GOTV in Blue States and Blue Swing States.
We have a Gov election in NJ this November and have shenanigans with the 'special election date' to do give Booker Lautenberg's seat. We need a win here - it would be easier if Buono was on the same ballot on the same day with Booker - who WILL GOTV the minority vote in this state at the levels we saw in 2012.
The places to watch are PA, WI, etc. etc. That's where Democratic Presidents get their votes from. We must do a full court press to ensure we don't have a Philly Fiasco again.

(9,933 posts)saying that things had changed in the past fifty years after witnessing the wave of ugly racism that has been flooding the internet and airwaves since President Obama has been elected. If anything the past few years has shown that republican arguments in the 90s and early 2000s to reverse and/or nullify affirmative action and civil rights laws were seriously premature fantasy BS because the second Obama was elected suddenly all their repressed racism came flooding out.
Ugh.
This country gets more f'd up everyday.

(16,254 posts)The more they try to shut minorities out, the more determined they are to show them their rights.
What are they going to do when the minorities take over the majority and start making the rules? Be careful what you wish for, Repugs. You may just be laying the groundwork for a total reversal of the rules on voting, thereby making you the target. You are bordering on going too far in your pursuit of power and control of the WH.

(31,849 posts)If all Democrats make it our business to inform African-Americans of this latest assault, and Get out the African-American vote
And all Democrats work to disabuse young folks of the notion that libertarianism is anything more than a butter cream covered brick
and that the hyper-Progressivism, that we are seeing is great for primaries; but a recipe for general election defeats (in most parts of the country) even with the wackiest of gop candidates and their complete lack of record and reputation
And every Democrat makes it our business to inform and turn-out the low-income vote.
