Pray tell why? Was she signing "Fire" at the top of her hands? Is the Bus Driver so paranoid that that person thinks the hard of hearing kids are bad fingering him/her?

Explain, in any possible way, what could justify the persecution of an injured child.

Something is off with this. It has publication dates all over the place from as early as 1999 thru 2012. Very odd.

From the Comments Section.....

"A deaf New Jersey student who was banned from using sign language on a school bus in 2001 has refiled a lawsuit against Branchburg Stony Brook school board and officials. Danica Lesko, who turned 18 in January, has been waiting for justice for seven years, her father, John Lesko, told The Star-Ledger. Danica’s parents contend the ban “set off a chain of events that emotionally traumatized” their daughter and brought in a traumatist who found the youth “mistrustful and defensive.” Said John Lesko: “All we want is to get in front of an impartial jury and be heard.”

Plus the photo used may or may not be Danica. See the comments....

"Wy are they using a file photo of Zahra Baker getting a hearing aid with this story?Zahra was BRUTALLY murdered in N.C. and her step-mother is now in prison. Seems like they could be a little more sensitive when they illustrate current photos with file pictures."

I apologize for any inconvenience. Thanks for the catch, Jim Dandy.

Takes my breath away that the school board would have done that. Glad she's now suing.

Wow, the Washington Times really messed up this whole article. I usually don't pay attention to that publication...this reminds me why.

Thanks for the update FLyellowdog!

9. NJ Girl Danica Lesko No Longer Banned From Using Sign Language On Bus

http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/nj-girl-danica-lesko-no-longer-banned-using-sign-language-bus

After a 12-year-old hearing-impaired girl was threatened with suspension from school for using sign language on the bus, a New Jersey school district has reversed its position.

Danica Lesko was told by her school principal that her use of sign language was "disruptive." After the story became public and school district officials kept receiving calls and emails criticizing their decision, they decided that Lesko would not be barred from using sign language on the bus as long as she obeys all the district's safety rules, ABC News reported.

"The district's policy and the principal's intention is not to ban signing," said Superintendent Lois Capabianco. "Everyone needs to know that signing is allowed on the bus."

Capabianco did not want to elaborate because of active and potential litigation, but she did say that Lesko’s parents have been sent a letter that clarifies the policy.

Is the original story old or is it new? If it's old, is this reverse of policy old as well? And if so, why aren't the correct dates showing up? It's looks like it's currently being reported as of today's date.

What's the deal?
