(7,804 posts)I'm from Scotland. No politician in Scotland has ever been "loved". They work for us, not the other way round.
You mustn't ever let these people convince you that you should trust their decisions because they are the "good guys". That's just asking for trouble.

(894 posts)you like them as a pol as well as who they are as a human being. My only political sacred cow is Mario Cuomo, sometimes i say 'oh, i *love* him'. He's in my heart in a way. but then again, if he was what i've seen from the admin in the last 3 years i certainly would not feel that way about him anymore. lol.

(15,438 posts)Whether we like it or not, 9/11 has changed this country. This is now the result.
Had those Leftists/Libertarians all understood that they're not the majority in this country and voted for Al Gore and not chant that "Gore is no different than George" bullshit, 9-11 might not have happened. In fact, considering the anti-terrorism policies of President Clinton - something Al Gore would have definitely continued - there's almost a 90% chance the attacks would have been thwarted. And those are some GOOD odds.
But too many "Independents" and Leftists, Libertarians, etc., felt too good and got cocky. The economy was booming, people were making money, and then they got lazy . . . and the elections were close enough for the GOP and their moneyed masters to steal.
This NSA shit is the result. Don't blame me. I voted for Al Gore as a Democrat should.
Pholus
(4,062 posts)I refuse to accept the value of such an expensive program that has a "classified" track record and split support among the handful of people who are actually allowed to get some crumbs out of it. Now, I'm generally pretty agreeable if people talk to me, but finding this shit out due to whistleblowers irks the crap out of me. Fail.
Now I voted for Gore too, so don't take this wrong, but it wasn't "Libertarians and Leftists" causing the problem. If you want to point fingers why not start with the 308,000 Democrats who crossed party lines rather than the 67,000 "They're both the same so why not vote Nader" voters. They didn't vote Bush cause they were too lefty...
And the NSA shit didn't have to continue. Hence an even BIGGER disappointment with W's successor.

(15,438 posts)Transparency is much better than secrecy. Makes it easier on and for them. See how slippery that slope is?
Jesus. It's as if you hadn't read {or understood} a single word I wrote in my post.
As for those 308k "Democrats" who crossed over, you'll find them on this board daily spouting their hatred for President Obama and their love for Ron Paul supporter, KKK defender, Bush-lover Glenn Greenwald all the while claiming {with zero credibility} that they're Democrats but not actually proud Party Unity MY ASS people. With Democrats like those, who needs Teapublicans? Or Republicans, for that matter?
The oligarchy doesn't care about the sausage making when it comes to gaining power in this country. They just want the end-result. They don't give a fuck about purity or ideology because the result remains the same - Democrats, democracy, social welfare progams, and peace will all suffer when they have their lackeys, the Republicans, in powqer, and that's all that matters to them.
Pholus
(4,062 posts)But as long as we're engaging in hyperbole that one extreme outcome is "enabling terrorism," let's engage the other extreme outcome. A secret system is created without open oversight against corruption and abuse containing powerful information of the sort the oligarchs desire to maintain control.
Note: I substantially changed my reply from something rather offensive to this. I believe at some level we do actually agree but the 2000 election got in there as well.
Certainly, the extreme failure cases of widespread surveillance of the population are well documented.

BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)They couldn't replicate it in 2008 or 2012, why? Because Blacks, Latinos, and Asians came out en masse for Obama, and made it FAR from close, putting nearly five million votes between him and Mittney. That wasn't the case in 2000. Too many believed Nader was the second coming, the messiah {thanks, in large part, to Michael Moore who made a killing in profits after Bush was installed} and didn't bother to check that he was being funded by the same people who was funding Duhbya. They didn't bother to take into account Nader had zero political experience and has never held elected office. They just thought, wow, what a nice new shiny Liberal who'll make it all better. And then we got Bush, 9/11, deficits as far as the eye could see, high unemployment, wars of choice that nearly bankrupted this country, and the Patriot Act.
I wished I was as confident as you that that dog don't hunt no more because from where I'm sitting, he's gearing up for the big one in 2016, what with all the whining against this Democratic president that I'm seeing on so-called Democratic Party supporting sites.
Brace yourself. History is about to repeat itself, and we'll have no one else to blame than our side.

The thing that strikes me most about Obama, aside from his self-control, is his fine mind. People on all parts of the political continuum have been rough on him for one reason or another, and sometimes for no reason at all, but I find his decision-making process of particular interest.

(51,076 posts)He can think on his feet, he can see the big picture, he has compassion for his fellow man. All traits that worry the piss out of the likes of those who are hounding him for first one reason or another, both on this board and in the political world. Not to mention the big moneyed man. They he really worries, hence the hate directed towards him.
We have to get big money out of our political system otherwise we're screwed. Well we're screwed anyway now so when it comes right down to it we have nothing to loose by getting in the streets and demanding change.

the stereotype of 'rock fans' is the furthest thing from objective sensible judge as you can get, taking drugs because their idol takes drugs, banging their heads to show their worship and sheer joy of just being in their presence
frankly, my ideal of a president would be a dry accountant like figure, with a focus on specific accountability, because the things that really make a difference require an attention span longer than a drugged out rock fan (note, i said stereotype, i didnt mean ALL rock fans)

But now I want him to come out and DO something about this egregious over-stepping of government authority re. massive US and world surveillance by the NSA, sanctioned by him.
He has time. But will he?
I look at the fridge magnet with his face on it and I think, please do something Mr. Obama or I'm sorry but I'll have to take this magnet off my fridge...and when I do that...that's it! He becomes just another political smilie face. A fond relationship that hit the skids. LOL, as if anybody cares. (24,096 posts)I saw the Charlie Rose interview and Obama pretty well cleared up all the nonsense we have been hearing from the likes of HuffPo and all those sensationalistic morons that just want to sell headlines and no matter if they are true or not.
I especially liked how he cleared up the Syria issue from these nonsense headlines and rumours. Bill Clinton and his bud McCain can surely STFU now, because according to the President the situation room analyses all possibilities in the Syria situation and are not going to rush in unprepared like doofus Bush and unless you are there in that room, you don't know wtf you are talking about.
For those itching for a no fly zone, he said that he is not convinced that will work as Syria hasn't got that much of an airforce. It's a ground war and no fly may not be the answer. That was just one point.
Clinton is unsettled becasue he doesn't have Hillary on the inside any more to fill him in on what's going on and use to his advantage.
Touché, Mr. President. I am glad you are in charge and not the slew of idiots that think they know better than you.

(13,390 posts)I understand where the OP is coming from. I've read his books and paid close attention to his presidency. My view is that he is an intelligent self aware man who truly cares about people and has a remarkable sense of empathy with people whose participation in the American life is limited in contrast to the majority.
The OPs idea of love is not like love of a boyfriend or something. It is this:
"Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love." Martin Luther King Jr.

President Obama isn't perfect, but he's as good of a president we'll get with this shitty Congress. Too many Americans believe that the president is the most powerful position in this country, thanks to incorporated media {a.k.a. And President Obama highlighted that painful, eye-opening fact as none other.
