Sen. Marco Rubio has reiterated that he wont support an immigration reform bill that includes rights for same-sex couples, and he predicts such a provision will kill the bill.
If this bill has in it something that gives gay couples immigration rights and so forth, it kills the bill, the Florida Republican told conservative radio host Andrea Tantaros on her show today. Im gone, Im off it, and Ive said that repeatedly. And I dont think thats going to happen, and it shouldnt happen. This is already a difficult enough issue as it is.
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont Tuesday introduced an amendment to the comprehensive immigration reform bill that would allow citizens to sponsor foreign same-sex spouses for permanent residency in the U.S., just as citizens with opposite-sex foreign spouses can now. Leahy, a Democrat, had withdrawn the amendment last month with a heavy heart, as he put it, but he decided to try again.
Rubio, a rising star in the Republican Party, also told Tantaros any immigration bill he would support must also provide for improved border security.

I wonder how many in his family have used this sponsorship? And yes it's a fair question to ask so don't even go there.

(22,541 posts)At some point they can't always sacrifice the LGBT community every single time and tell them they have to wait. Will the GOP really go on the record as a group as being against immigration reform?
I look at this as Rubio desperately trying to save possibility of a larger Latino vote within the Republican Party. He can pick up a few more Republican votes for the bill as long "teh gays" aren't in the mix. Discrimination is discrimination.
I say we don't let Rubio get his way.

(16,862 posts)He's willing to kill Immigration Reform in order to keep out gay immigrants. So much for Rubio representing a more 'moderate,' inclusive side of the GOP. He's killing his career and damaging his party, and that's just fine by me.
