When famous people transcend famous-peoplehood and become icons, their personalities will often be reduced to one defining characteristic: Abraham Lincoln was as honest as he was tall, Mahatma Gandhi was as peaceful as he was short, etc. But famous people are still, you know, people. We understand that even the most beloved cultural icons are allowed to have flaws, but in some cases, their real personalities actually contradicted the one thing they're now famous for. For example ...
#5. John Lennon Was an Abusive Asshole Who Hit Women
The Beatles were all about love: They used the word 613 times in their songs, and like 300 of those are probably from John Lennon's "All You Need Is Love" alone. In his solo career, Lennon continued singing about love, but also about peace -- he even spent money putting up billboards with pro-peace messages in cities like London and New York.
Many of his fans treat Lennon like a modern day Jesus: He preached peace and love, dressed like a disheveled hippie, died tragically young, and came back four years later with a posthumous album. Just like Jesus.
What He Was Really Like:

(42,001 posts)Maybe someday the little creep who wrote it will acquire some depth and be curious about these people and their foibles, their flaws and their fears and be able to write something that isn't just pathetically snide.
And maybe he'll also learn that most of his big news has, for the most part, been known forever.

(21,020 posts)I saw that on the Cracked.com site earlier today and thought about the irony.
A few years ago, quite a few DUers were totally outraged with Elton John when he performed at Rush Limbaugh's wedding. They were NEVER going to forgive him! They were NEVER going to listen to him or buy his music again!
He didn't hurt anyone. He only performed.
Yet, here is John Lennon, abuser of women and his own child, and yet so many DUers think he's one step down from God himself.
I don't get that one. Never will.

(9,967 posts)I haven't read the article, but I'm guessing that when you wrote "own child" you meant Julian.
Well, Sean has his scars too. He tells that once John became so furious that yelled so loud right on his ear that he suffered permanent hearing loss. Considering he had just turned five when his father was murdered, he was practically a baby when this happened... yes, so much for peace and love...

Anyway, yes, what you said...so much for "peace and love"...
He talked a good game but failed to live the words.

(13,616 posts)Granted, Elton was stupid for helping Rush, but many people revere Lennon as if he were Lenin.

(21,020 posts)it's an acceptable news source or not, but the question is, how true (or not) are the...let's call them...allegations?
IOW, does it really matter who says John Lennon was a wife and child abuser if it was true?
Was he, or was he not?
PS...I'm focusing in on Lennon because I suspect that he will be the "hot button" issue for many people who don't want to know/admit that their idol died an abusive asshole, as the article states.

(29,676 posts)and it wasn't exactly good. He's always said he felt much closer to Paul than to his own father. And supposedly his treatment of Cynthia was well-documented.
I don't know as much about how he treated Yoko except that his adultery was also very well known.

(13,616 posts)Just that the points they make are funny. John Stewart does that and he is hailed as Cronkite.
