If You Can't Afford Tires You Can Now Rent Them. New Way To Help? The Poor

I was listening to progressive talk radio yesterday (760Am Denver) and heard something that is hard to believe. I guess now there are companies that will rent you tires if you cannot afford to buy them.

They target people who can least afford it and have them pay 4 times the cost for the same product.

I bought 4 tires for my truck at a salvage yard for $25 dollars a piece

Plenty of tread life on them. I bet I get 40,000 miles on them . New these tires would have been $215 each

We bought tires a couple of months ago, paid 120.00 per tire, and those aren't even considered the "best" ones. What's up with the price of tires??

I replaced all of them one at a time over 15-18 months, got the last one done just before winter set in.

They were cheap, really so cheap one of them was defective requiring the tire dealer to replace it for free.

I thought I was making a 'Walmart' decision: trapping myself in a product that won't last very long. But a 17 year old car can't be expected to keep running forever.

As leg-hold economic traps go, I can't imagine willingly stepping into rented tires.

The cost of renting is many times the cost of new tires. If you can afford to rent, save until you can buy. If that is at all possible.

And I have known of people who have done it.

Mostly I think it is for rim and tire packages, I have never heard of someone renting just tires.

Still a completely ridiculous thing to do, but because you have your priorities so fucked up that you have to have 20" on your ride that you get into this ... not really my concern.

As others have said, there are plenty of ways to get cheap tires.

That was the first place I ran into this phenomena.
