General Discussion

A test that was designed to inform the student of their political leanings. I'd sort of let her find her own way in this political arena. Of course she does see the choices and hears the opinions of her parents.
We live a VERY red State...Utah. We live in an extremely conservative, religious community in this red State. Utah. She is an honest, respectful , smart, beautiful, ahtletic athiest....and she tested out as a strong Liberal
Following the test, she said the class discussion on Zimmerman seemed clearly drawn along political lines and the RW'ers were clearly on the wrong side of social/moral justice. In her opinion all of their arguements were based on the right to kill...not the right to live.
My heart sings for a girl that can internalize the need to respect life:

(3,978 posts)it isn't easy for young children to grow up in an environment where there is peer pressure.

(12,504 posts)one of the traits I failed to list was the self confidence this young lady has. That confidence has a great power to nullify much peer pressure to chose a path that is against one's own personal convictions.

(12,504 posts)Note sure if you were being wry or not.
She doesn't understand this "religious" state and it'sseemingly contradictory desire to use the death penalty. But that's another discussion lol

(13,324 posts)A kid with his whole life ahead of him, who never hurt anybody, demonized posthumously by millions as a "thug." God, this country fucking sucks...

(4,713 posts)I can relate we live in SC & not the civilized parts. Both my 15 yr old & 11 yr old have had their battles at school. My youngest put the smackdown (figuratively) at school against one of his teachers who that her classroom was her personal Bible study & my 15yr old had a blast at election time debating these little nutters at school.
Sometimes you can only do so much but when they come back to tell you of their conquests you know you've done right.

(12,504 posts)having fun with these debates for sure. Somtimes I think it emboldens them when they are in the minority...emboldens them to speak up and make a firm stand. I love it!!

(29 posts)You should be very proud of her. And of your parenting. To have a child who isn't pulled under by peer pressure in this day is an achievement in itself. Good luck maintaining in Utah. Central Virginia is a challenge, too, but not on the level of Utah.

(13,485 posts)I am also from Utah and I know exactly what you mean. Utah is a different animal. You should be very proud of yourselves for having brought up a child with such excellent instincts especially in this political climate.

(10,597 posts)It's like a big passage, to learn that your children have grown in to lovers of Democracy & Justice. I know how thrilled your are, as I feel the same way that my sons all grew up to be good Democrats too. I wasn't too sure of the oldest, but finally he came along, as he went to work after he got out of the AF and joined a Union. Became the Union Steward. Don't have to worry about him anymore. All of them have real good judgement and care about someone other than themselves. That's about as good as we can hope for in this mean old cruel world we brought them into, huh? Let your heart sing!

(1,388 posts)a loving and thinking young lady. I am not sure if you are LDS or any other Christian faith, but if the thoughts and teachings of Jesus are followed by most, most would test out as a strong liberal. By the way, I am not atheist, but nor am I affiliated with any religion other than knowing that somehow all this was set in motion by some powerful force. Everyday I wake up it seems like I am in church and the temple is my back yard. I know that is coming out funny, but if you knew me you'd know what I mean.

(12,504 posts)I also tend towards atheism, but again, letting her have her own head in this journey. I doubt she will ever join the LDS church. I was a card carrying member for too long and have a very strong opinions over certain doctrines and policies....she has clearly picked up on those.
