DOJ likely opening criminal investigation into Greenwald's source

President Barack Obama's administration is likely to open a criminal investigation into the leaking of highly classified documents that revealed the secret surveillance of Americans' telephone and email traffic, U.S. officials said on Friday.

The law enforcement and security officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said the agencies that normally conduct such investigations, including the FBI and Justice Department, were expecting a probe into the leaks to a British and an American newspaper.

Such investigations typically begin after an agency that believes its secrets have been leaked without authorization files a complaint with the Justice Department.

It was unclear on Friday whether a complaint had been submitted by the publicity-shy National Security Agency, which was most directly involved in the collection of trillions of telephone and email communications.

However, one U.S. official with knowledge of the situation said that given the extent and sensitivity of the recent leaks, federal law may compel officials to open an investigation.

in Congress, and then spread out to the staff of those on the committees.

They oversee this stuff, and would have had a copy of the court order. They're cleared for Top Secret documents, but don't really respect the classifications and leave shit lying around. I'd specifically look at members with Libertarian leanings, since Greenwald is substantially a libertarian.

That's where I'd look.

Which leads to a rather obvious question: If the info gathered is so harmless, why is it being gathered and why is the gathering of it secret?

It's hard to keep up with all the different excuses these days.

Now I feel much safer, they are going after another Whistle Blower.

Still waiting for the DOJ to go after someone, anyone, even one of those who actually caused harm to this country. Like just one Wall St. Criminal or one War Criminal.

But I don't get my hopes up much anymore, however it would be a nice surprise, someday, to see just one major criminal indicted, tried and convicted. At the very least it would help to deter other criminals from collapsing the economy again and harming so many millions of people.
