Alabama: "The child lost a finger in the incident but is otherwise fine."

FAIRFIELD, Ala. -- Fairfield Police confirmed that a five-year-old was shot on Friday afternoon.

(snip)

While the grandmother was away, the child ventured into the grandparents’ bedroom and found a gun that was hidden in a drawer.

Police say the child was trying to load a bullet into the barrel of the gun when it discharged.

The child lost a finger in the incident but is otherwise fine.

I've always liked the idea of disassembling firearms when not in use; most toddlers can pull a trigger, but can't reassemble a broken-down pistol.
