any of us had imagined.
..exteme warmth many times throughout the last few million years
..It may be much easier to get rid of sea ice than we thought before.

sufficiently, the pieces acts as sail-equipped-spoons stirring up the saline layers. The ice is melted from above AND eaten from below.

It is hard to read. I always look at Alaska to get my bearings. Notice that the sea temps flowing past Greenland are warmer than usual. As this link shows:

(27,993 posts)As usual, it's all about the if. Allow me to explain what this is about:
In the first Arctic Sea Ice update of the 2013 melting season that was posted a couple of days ago, I announced that a cyclone was forecasted to move over the Arctic Basin and stay there for a while. It's been there for a couple of days now as can be seen on this animation of Danish Meteorological Institute SLP images:

There was an Arctic circle wide cyclone circulation around the N. Pole. And it was releasing over Canada and flowing down into the US. And that cold air is behind the cold front now causing the tornadoes.
When you overlay it on the Arctic sea temp map, you can see that over the Atlantic the warm water is flowing in the same direction as the winds. Notice that waters around Alaska are colder than the water over the pole, in Siberia.
