Iran unveils unusually colored blue submarine

It looks like the Iranian Navy really wanted people to see its new submarine. In a live broadcast on state TV on Wednesday, the Islamic Republic showed off a new Sina 7 submarine that is painted in an unusually bright turquoise blue hue.

So, why exactly would any military want to design its ship in a color that can be easily spotted ? The Daily Mail speculates that the ship's designers mistakenly chose the color, believing it would help the craft blend in with the ocean's waters.

Launched from Bandar Abbas, near the Strait of Hormuz, the Sina 7 and two Ghadir-class submarines represent the first wave of the country's "indigenously built" warships, Iran said.

that thing looks like a Bathtub toy compared to an American Hunter-Killer, and my bet would be that any American Air-Carrier Group within a hundred miles would know EXACTLY where that thing was the moment it submerged...

They get points for trying though, maybe??

and since were on the subject, I'll say this--I'm no fan of the ridiculous levels of Pentagon and Defense spending that we have reached, but I will concede the following:

To build shit the RIGHT way, costs more
We don't ALWAYS build the right things for the right reasons (F-22 Raptor/JSF, anyone?)
When we DO decide that something needs to be built, and built right, HOLY GOD do we build some impressive shit...WHALES have trouble finding our Submarines. Iran's Pastel Navy won't be a problem, I don't care HOW impressed they are with it.

"Sina 7" is a "missile-launching frigate":

Along with submarines, Iran also unveiled the main structure of the Sina 7 missile-launching frigate

according to the Iranian TV story that Yahoo linked to themselves. The submarines are called 'Ghadir' or 'Qadir'.

I wouldn't read too much into the colour, either. At about 1:10 into the Press TV video, you see the turquoise one beside 2 similar submarines, but in sea green. It's possible they painted the superstructure brightly on this one just so it stood out well for this ceremony, where they're showing it off to remind politicians they should be given some more money. The video at the Daily Mail shows it's only the top section painted turquoise.

Couldn't agree more with your comments.

Another demonstration that mainstream media today has descended to the level of secondary school gossip.

"ha ha they painted it the wrong color."

Calling the Iranians stupid, but stupidly overlooking the obvious reason for the color, as you point out, so people can see it on TV.

it might have less visibility when submerged.
It is a small anti-ship sub. Perhaps the blue is harder to spot from planes.
