Ohio National Guard shot and killed 4 students and wounded 9, all unarmed protesting the Viet Nam War. Thanks for posting this as I was looking thru the posts for an acknowledgment of what happened 54 years ago. I remember being horrified that a governor would order to shoot unarmed peaceful protesters.

On television I saw the father of one of the victims, Allison Krause, barely able to control his grief, pointing to the fact that President Nixon had referred to student protesters as “bums.” He cried out, “My daughter was not a bum!”

That most iconic moment of the anti-war movement; burned into the minds of 10's of millions of Americans.
I'll never forget it.

Things got very real quickly. 5 of us left for Berkeley after graduating high school a month later. It was now a lifestyle.

He suddenly changed having a 17 year old son that was registering for the draft real soon.

I recall walking down Market street in San Francisco at one of the peace marches holding his WWII Marine Corps hand.

For my American History class.

I mostly used the James Michener book as a reference.

I have never heard of it, and I was appalled (the area I grew up in was very Republican but I wasn’t very political. )

This book greatly increased my understanding of what happened at Kent State and the events that led up to it.

"On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard gunned down unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. In a deadly barrage of 67 shots, 4 students were killed and 9 shot and wounded. It was the day America turned guns on its own children--a shocking event burned into our national memory. A few days prior, 10-year-old Derf Backderf saw those same Guardsmen patrolling his nearby hometown, sent in by the governor to crush a trucker strike. Using the journalism skills he employed on 'My Friend Dahmer' and 'Trashed', Backderf has conducted extensive interviews and research to explore the lives of these four young people and the events of those four days in May, when the country seemed on the brink of tearing apart. 'Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio', which will be published in time for the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, is a moving and troubling story about the bitter price of dissent--as relevant today as it was in 1970"--Provided by publisher.
