[UPDATE 1:50 P.M.] CAL POLY HUMBOLDT CAMPUS SEALED OFF AMID LAW ENFORCEMENT BUILDUP AND STUDENT PROTESTS

There are 11 links to events at Cal Poly Humboldt over the last week at the bottom of this latest report; lots of pictures and videos. Several protesters have already been hospitalized and Mad River Hospital in Arcata has closed to prepare for a possible "mass casualty event".

[UPDATE 1:50 P.M.] CAL POLY HUMBOLDT CAMPUS SEALED OFF AMID LAW ENFORCEMENT BUILDUP AND STUDENT PROTESTS

This afternoon, Cal Poly Humboldt has declared a complete shutdown of its campus following the ongoing student protest over the Israeli/Hamas War that has gripped key administrative buildings. The university issued a stern warning at 12:41 p.m., announcing a hard closure, banning unauthorized individuals from entering the premises.
The closure encompasses major access points, including road blocks at Harpst and B streets, as well as Plaza and LK Wood, as confirmed by the university’s statement. The directive from Cal Poly Humboldt emphasizes that only individuals with explicit permission from University Police are allowed on campus grounds. Those found violating this mandate face potential citations or arrests.

Students residing in campus housing are allowed limited movement within their dormitories and associated dining facilities, but are restricted from accessing other parts of the university. This measure comes as part of the university’s response to the occupation of Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall, along with reported unlawful activities around the building areas and the quad.

At least two state campus police vehicles were seen at the Blue Lake Casino overnight. Social media is reporting a bulldozer and other equipment moving onto campus.

Bad situation that would be better if not occurred to this level IMO.

Police have already harmed protestors. There are pictures of bloodied and stitched heads at the links below the posted article.

Humboldt has a major Native American studies program because of political and economic rise of north coast Tribes.

Cal Poly Humboldt is a large source of new and more progressive to Humboldt County, more conservative residents tend to view Humboldt students in a negative light.

Much harm will come to Cal Poly Humboldt regardless of the right or wrong of the issues that ignited the mess.

Humboldt County is comparatively rural and remote. Authorities likely can be more direct than in an urban setting with more media.

Hope the MSM lands in Humboldt.

Thank you.

Sometimes it looks like we are eating our own and harming Democratic tending institutions.

Part of the escalation of the protests looks to be because of poor decision by the administration and law enforcement. Think the mess is an unproductive fiasco and harmful to everyone except those that want to bash heads or see heads bashed or students otherwise punished. Local conservatives are happy because they do not like Cal Poly Humboldt in general.

Makes me sad. I am a Humboldt native (not Native American). Worry about the university being harmed. Note Cal Poly Humboldt is the strongest Democratic and progressive institution in Humboldt County.

Here are the two latest updates. The students demands are out to lunch. The Faculty Union is behind the students and blames the school administration for escalation.

UPDATE 5:08 p.m.:
Michihiro Sugata, Professor of Sociology at CPH, approached our reporter, Ryan Hutson. He said he was present when the following information was conveyed from students to the administration. He explained that the students want this to be communicated publicly right away, in the event that it may grease the wheels for a good faith negotiation.
He told us,

[T]he students have requested…what they call “the three Ds,” which is to Deescalate, meaning the removal of the police and the threat of police violence, and also for academic amnesty for the students that are here that they won’t be facing academic repercussions.

Number two, to Divest. They want a full audit of investments that the university may have in companies that are supporting the State of Israel. And they also want [the University to] stop selling… products from companies that… are supporting the State of Israel.l.

And then lastly, …they would like Cal Poly Humboldt to make an open declaration in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza and they would like them to urge the CSU to do the same.

And if those are met, there was consensus, overwhelming consensus, within the students that they would peacefully surrender Siemens Hall, and there would be no…absolutely…no need for police violence on this campus anymore.

…[T]hat has been communicated to the administration. And if the police take action at this point,…the administration needs…to respond to why they were not willing to negotiate with the students.

UPDATE 5:53 p.m.: The California Faculty Association Humboldt just posted,

CFA Humboldt Condemn the Hard Closure of Cal Poly Humboldt Campus and Risk to Campus Community Members

The Cal Poly Humboldt Chapter of the California Faculty Association (CFA), a labor union that represents teaching, counseling, library, and coaching faculty of the California State University System, strongly condemn today’s actions of Cal Poly Humboldt (CPH) Administration as yet another dangerous escalation of their response to a peaceful campus demonstration.

Just after 12:30pm, Saturday, April 27th, CPH Administration sent an email that the campus was officially under a “hard” closure. As of the writing of this email, a strong police presence has been sighted on campus, barricades have been erected to prohibit access to campus, and students who live on campus are being restricted to the resident halls and the dining hall.

This campus closure represents a dangerous escalation of the administrative response to this week’s student demonstrations against the Israeli government’s relentless assault on the people of Palestine. Student protestors and their numerous allies including faculty and staff, are still in the central campus area, now isolated and vulnerable to the kind of police violence that occurred April 22nd, the first night of the demonstration. The students and their allies are engaged in a peaceful protest, closing campus and introducing unneeded police presence puts students and others at an unnecessary risk of both physical and emotional harm.

Last evening, student protesters opened Siemens Hall, the administrative building they have been occupying, so that all could see that, while there is graffiti on the walls, there has been little other property damage. Contrary to what was insinuated by CPH administration earlier this week, no confidential files have been compromised. Nearly all administrative offices remain locked. Students are demonstrating on behalf of the people of Gaza and all Palestinians and are not interested in administrative paperwork.

CFA Humboldt demands that:
• Tom Jackson, who has been asked to step down from his role as CPH President, must immediately resign.
• Mark Johnson, who has been asked to step down from his role as Chief of Staff of President Tom Jackson, must immediately resign.
• Barriers to Campus need to be immediately removed and campus needs to be reopened. All members of the university community need access to campus.
• Police officers must leave their stations on campus and return to their home offices.
• Cal Poly Humboldt administration needs to commit to student safety and agree to continue to respectfully and in good faith negotiate with student protesters.

We also ask those who are able to come to LK Wood to help observe the [perimeter] of campus as long as you are able.

In the words of CPH Professor Gabi Kirk, “I have seen this happen in Palestine to restrict freedom of mobility and attempt to quash protest. Our students who are protesting for justice, peace, and an end to killing in Palestine are now having it happen to them.”

Restricting freedom of movement, speech, and peaceful demonstration will not make our campus safer nor will it heal our campus community of recent events. CFA Humboldt asks CPH Administration to open the campus, support students, and allow faculty to do the job we were hired to do, teach students.

In union,
CFA Humboldt Executive Board

It doesn’t justify the way Israel is executing the war, but Hamas broke the cease fire, and lit the match by slaughtering civilians on Oct 7th and taking hostages.

Were you as outraged by that before Israel responded?

Were you outraged what is happening in Sudan and Syria by those respective governments against their civillian population, or is your outrage only selective.

As for those among the protesters who are idolizing Hamas, identifying Hamas as heros, and explicitly calling for the “death to Jews”, they are not part of any peaceful protest.

I don't agree with the tactics of either side, the situation has been managed into disaster. Feel that toxic in World has come local.

There are 11 detailed links to watch the progress of this fiasco at bottom of article posted.

Protestors and vandals are mostly students and some faculty. Faculty several days ago gave the university president a 70% vote of no confidence. Lots of local activists because of seasoned environmental and Native American activists. Some more seasoned to be confrontive than positive.

Ridiculous to suggest outside agitators or Putin lovers.

The only right-wing provocateur documented in Humboldt County is an assistant DA that went into a demonstration at the Humboldt County Courthouse several months ago with the largest sign. The sign said on one side "Kill Jew Babies" and can't recall the other side of sign but he got outed. He has an Israeli flag posted in his office window at the courthouse.

Cal Poly Humboldt has a major Native American studies program. Local Tribes include the Yurok, Karuk, Wyot, Tolowa and Hupa. The Tribes know Reservations, having land stolen, and genocide. Recent decades the Tribes have regaied land and exxperienced economic and politcal success compared to the not so distant past. Note the outside LE agents mentioned stayed at the Blue Lake Casino (owned by a Yurok Rancheria and about 6 miles from the campus).

A majority of the students come from outside of Humboldt County because of reputation for progressive social and environmental ideals. The university is also the major source of new brains and resented by conservative locals that would love to see head bashing and expulsions. Many Cal Poly Humboldt students come for university and stay for life.

Although this group, Menominee Warrior Society, was armed.
In Jan 1975, they went in to take over this church property.
After a siege that lasted a month, the church agreed to sell the property for $1 to the Menominees
They sadly couldn't afford the upkeep and within five months ceded the property back to the Alexian Brothers.
A few months later a fire consumed the monastery.

It kinda seemed like alot for nothing.
It was always in the news, but in a way it kinda wasn't.
The town where it occurred was sorta off the beaten path.
My BF's family had property there.
But it was January and too cold to visit unless one was into snowmobiling.

The place is now an oddity

&ab_channel=RoadTripsWithYogi
In this episode I visit The Alexian Brothers Novitiate, just outside of Gresham, Wisconsin. Originally built in 1939 as a residence, it was converted in 1950 into a novitiate after being donated, until 1968. In 1975 it was sized by the Menominee Warrior Society, who demanded that it be turned over to the Menominee Indian Reservation. Actor and Native American Rights advocate Marlon Brando showed up to show his support. The takeover lasted one month and ended with the Brothers selling the property to the Menominee Reservation for one dollar, and the 39 member Warrior Society being arrested. There were no injuries or fatalities. The current owners are in the process of restoring the building.

Cal Poly Humboldt Student Response to Admin Escalation We are disappointed to receive an email from campus administration announcing a “hard close” of campus. Allowing only those with permission to enter campus at this time. Anyone on campus is subject to citation or arrest. Police were present at the time the email went out, setting up concrete barriers at all campus entrances. Students living on campus are restricted to their dorms and residential areas. We have and remain to be a peaceful protest. In negotiations with administration yesterday we were given the impression that negotiations would continue however, they have recently informed us that they refuse to negotiate further. We are concerned for the potential of police escalation at this time. We showed good faith in our negotiations and deescalation yesterday by reopening Siemens Hall. Administration has not kept their end of the agreement. We love and care for our community and continue to stand in solidarity with other campuses for a free Palestine. Shame on administration for silencing the free speech of our brave students. We, as ever, are not afraid.

Cal Poly Humboldt campus *closes* through the end of the semester as students have seized multiple buildings on campus.

Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East have been barricaded and taken over by pro-Palestine protesters.

The buildings are completely trashed with graffiti plastered all over the walls and have been under the control of the protesters for 5 days now.

One building is now named “Intifada Hall.”

"The occupation of Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East is causing ongoing inability to open other campus facilities," the school said.

"Since Monday night, protestors have attempted several times to break into multiple locked buildings with the intention of either locking themselves in, vandalizing, or stealing equipment. Vandalism and theft have continued across campus."

Cal Poly Humboldt is the largest and most influential progressive and Democratic leaning institution in Humboldt County, long the source of new and progressive ideas locally.

There is a major Native American Studies program at Cal Poly Humboldt because there are 5 major local Tribes (Yurok, Wyot, Karuk, Tolowa, and Hupa). The Tribes have increasing political and economic influence. There are hardened activists because of past environmental and NA protests, often with overlapping agendas. Personally. I do not always agree with the agendas or methods. Local right wingers and LE relish the idea of some major hippy punching and damaging the university. Humboldt County was home of Redwood Summer and LE using rags to rub pepper spray into protester's eyes (result was settlement of Humboldt County paid to protesters). Regardless of right or wrong on issues, the LE history is to escalate and abuse.

There are many pictures and videos including live stream at the link provided and one can see the escalation from the beginning. Note there are 11 major links at the bottom of this updated article.
