(4,392 posts)Only 35 percent of West Virginians describe themselves as pro-choice, lower than Alabama, and much white. I suspect an economic populist would be more likely to get traction, Sanders resonated there, but statewide it looks pretty bleak for the next generation. We've got a good candidate for governor, but it's an uphill fight for sure.

(14 posts)Re that 2000 campaign, I recall how poorly Lieberman did when it came to debating VP Cheney. He showed no fire whatsoever and acted in a collegial manner when Cheney spoke. Lieberman was a lousy Dem and really showed his true colors when he supported McCain against Obama eight years later.

(81,555 posts)I remember wishing Gore had chosen someone else for his running mate. Lieberman didn't impress me much, but Gore thought highly of him, so for me, that made him okay. But when he went independent after having been such a prominent Democratic leader, that was extremely disappointing (from the "Dance with the One that Brung Ya" department). I remember actually feeling rather indignant. Not to mention abandoned, jilted, and betrayed.
Well, he's at rest now, and his years of service are complete. I wish his spirit safe passage.

(47,691 posts)He wasn't exactly my favorite Democrat, but when he changed, it was very unsettling and inexplicable. As time passed, I liked him less and less. His smooth, condescending voice combined with that smirk rubbed me the wrong way. I wonder what Al Gore thought about the change(s) in him.
Apparently, we never really knew who he was.
NanaCat
(1,382 posts)Entitled to be the newly anointed leader of Democrats, but he didn't bother to ask Democrats if they agreed with that. Most of us hadn't forgotten how he undermined Clinton with his mush-mouth simpering about morals, or how many of us held our noses about that part of the Gore ticket.
Oh--and it was well-known that he was a bag man for the pharmacy and health insurance industries. He was always ready to sell out Americans to get their big lobbying money.
He was always a self-serving wanker that nobody but other self-serving wankers liked.

(42,642 posts)Lieberman also remained a firm backer of Israel. Earlier this month, he wrote a column in the Wall Street Journal attacking Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for saying that Israel needed to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as its leader.
While Mr. Schumers statement undoubtedly pleased American critics of Israel, he wrote, for the Israelis it was meaningless, gratuitous and offensive.
Is Israeli and he hates what Bibi has done to Israel

It wasnt that he changed, it was that he got outed based on being elevated on the National stage.
With that I was shocked at his net worth, at how low it was. I would expect at least 10x that for a person who sold his soul.
So was he truly just a vindictive little fuck or did he route the money to other family members?
I really dont care either way, but damn how does a person bend over for the insurance companies, make 250k a year for 25 plus years and only have a net worth of just over 3 million.

(43,414 posts)Only from what I remember or read over the years. He did some good consumer and environmental things over the decades. I always thought he was not a very good choice for VP. There were real liberals, in Florida, available. He reached so far across the aisle in later years that he was reaching from the opposite side. It's fine to compromise when needed, but you need core principles from which to compromise. Straddling the middle is waffling with self-doubt.

My contempt for him occurred during the Democratic Convention when he made his grand entrance while Stephen Hawking was on the stage. He stole the attention and Hawking was left speaking to no one. Lieberman adored the adulation at the time but eventually turned on us.

(27,847 posts)It's hard for me to move past how Lieberman chimed in about counting late (military) votes in Florida in 2000. Then, when he lost his Democratic Senate primary run a few years later, he wouldn't concede defeat and ran as an Independent.
After that, I always felt that he was far more concerned with his own narcissism than my vote for president in 2000. He fought harder for himself than for the country.

(15,412 posts)When he ran for Senate the first time he did so to defeat a liberal republican in 1988 (yes, they did exist and he was more liberal than Lieberman). His name was Lowell Weicker and one of his big platforms was to normalize relations with Cuba. That was the issue of the campaign and Lieberman got the votes of conservative Republicans winning by just 10K votes.
No, I will never forget. I like Weicker. This was a time when there really were good people on both sides. Lieberman was not one of them.
