NE: State lawmaker told to 'knock it off' after urging ministers to stand against abortion initiative

LINCOLN — A state lawmaker has been told to “knock it off” and apologize after urging ministers in central Nebraska to speak out against an initiative petition drive seeking to expand abortion rights.

State Sen. Loren Lippincott of Central City, in a March 4 mailing on state letterhead to pastors and ministry leaders, urged them to “stand against” and “use your influence” to oppose the petitions being circulated by a coalition of abortion rights groups called “Protect Our Rights.”

Its petition seeks to place on the November ballot a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to abortion to the point when an unborn baby would be viable outside the womb, which is generally considered to be after 23 weeks.

In his letter, which the Examiner obtained, Lippincott quoted a Bible verse from Proverbs stating: “Open your mouths for the mute … defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Mr. Lippincott's party doesn't want to help any of the rights of the poor and needy post-birth.
