CA: Shasta County's Elections Office responds to alleged errors in ballot tabulation

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Shasta County’s Elections Commission discussed alleged errors in tabulation by the county's elections office during their meeting Monday.

Multiple speakers, including District 4 Supervisor Patrick Jones, said they saw irregularities in the election office’s 1% manual tally, conducted last week. The Registrar of Voters (ROV) office in downtown Redding has seen constant observers of late, which is encouraged. However, Assistant County Clerk Joanna Francescut says her staff must balance answering observer questions with doing their job.

"There's a lot of concern because we're asking people to be quiet during a hand count," Francescut detailed on Tuesday. "That's because we have three tables [with groups of four] in the same room counting. Any time there's loud noises, it disrupts the process and increases the opportunity for error."

"We want people to have a transparent view of the process but there is a boundary line, and we have to keep that boundary line to ensure the ballots are counted accurately," Francescut added.
