US supreme court to hear first major abortion case since Roe decision

(Guardian UK) Abortion is back at the US supreme court, with arguments on Tuesday in the first major case on the issue since a 6-3 majority ruled in 2022 to overturn Roe v Wade and end the national right to abortion – a decision that unleashed abortion bans throughout the country as well as a political backlash that Democrats hope will serve them in the coming presidential election.

At issue in the case is the future of mifepristone, a drug typically used in US medication abortions. The rightwing groups that brought the case are seeking to roll back measures taken by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the drug’s availability in recent years.

A decision in their favor would apply nationwide, including in states that protect abortion access, and would likely make the drug more difficult to acquire. The loosening of restrictions on mifepristone have helped mitigate the impact of post-Roe abortion bans; if those restrictions are reimposed, abortion rights groups anticipate it will become significantly more difficult to access abortions in the US.

“More than 60% of abortions in the US are medication abortions, so that would impact a substantial number of people, whether you live in a protective state or a restricted state,” said Nicole Huberfeld, a health law professor at Boston University’s School of Public Health. ..................(more)

From other countries. And how are they going to enforce the abortion pill ban in California, Maryland, DC or New York?

When so many people see abortion as a medical right, forcing all of them to obey the religiously insane Supremes is going to be really difficult.

Look at how bad they were at stopping cannabis and other drugs from spreading through out the US. Keeping the abortion pill out of the hands of American women is impossible.

The insanity of what the religious fools on the Supremes have unleashed on American women is horrifying.

And I don't mean with mushrooms or walnuts.

States in the deep south, after all, refused to enforce Brown v. Board for another 15 to 20 years in most cases.

And this is women's lives we're talking about here - to say nothing of their basic human rights.

because none of these justices are physicians.

Religious hysterics have an incredibly poor track record when it comes to curing people.

The Mississippi law involved banning abortion after 15 weeks was upheld 6-3. However, the vote to overturn Roe was 5-4.

It's important to use 5-4 accurately to reflect how important one seat can be for maintaining rights in this country, particularly as an election approaches.

that they want to turn the U.S. into a theocracy, so you can rest assured they're going to restrict the use of mifepristone, overruling the FDA.

They're in for a penny, in for a pound with the American christofascists, so to not rule to restrict the drug's use would be a step backward, and it's full speed ahead with American theocracy from here on out.

Clarence and Ginny will be celebrating once again.
