Doesn’t mean the current administration has anything to do with the problem. But yes… someone screwed up - as huge vessels pass through there constantly

No bridge support from the 70’s was designed to mitigate that kind of energy. This falls fully on the captain of that vessel.

Fox's chyron will allude to those being the circumstances.

Trump will boast than none of his bridges have fallen down.

Empty G will claim it was antifa.

Comer will investigate the bridge for jumping in front of the freighter.

It is as though the difference between designing for 2000 lb Toyota Corolla collisions versus new vehicles like 7000 lb Tesla trucks.

Was it not with Reagan that the USA ceased investing in infrastructure, especially maintenance?

In 1977 the largest container ship had a capacity of under 3000 TEU* (twenty foot long container. A 40 ft is 2 units. Container weight can vary).
In 2023 the largest ships are ranging at 24,000 TEU. The Dali, built in 2015 is a 10,000 TEU ship.
* TEU means 20 ft equivalent unit

In doing so, Joe mentioned that there were hundreds, if not thousands of Bridges, that were in need of repair or replacement in this country. He pointed out past Republican Administrations that refused to address the situation.

It was not long ago when a stretch of I-35 collapsed over the Mississippi River during the George W. Bush years. The Lafayette Bridge that spanned a stretch of Hwy 52 into St, Paul was rebuilt years later for the same defects that collapsed the I-35 section. Same designer.

Bridges that span over bodies of water be they huge oceans, rivers, or lakes, such as the Mackinac and Tappan Zee Bridges, tend to wear out faster as moisture rusts out important parts. Which is why the tolls collected when one travels across the Golden Gate, repairs and upkeep are constant to keep that iconic Bridge from collapsing.

So RWers can complain all they want. If they are not willing to pay the band, they should not dance.

I just watched a credible You Tube presentation based on video taken at the time of the collision and it did show the ship losing power, dropping an anchor, then swerving out of it channel and into one of the bridge pylons because of the massive inertia that vessel still possessed.

For the benefit of lurking wingnuts reading this, the ship was registered in Singapore, built in 2015, and had a foreign crew.

You’re right, they didn’t build them that big back then. And also I think most ships built in 1915 have long since been scrapped.

because that's their solution to everything including inflation.

Freepers are being racist about DEI efforts without any evidence whatsoever. I don't know what their point is. Shipping has always been diverse and global in nature.

Suggesting the pilot was a variation of something other than a straight, white, experienced, Christian male (from birth) due to DEI policies.
Not knowing what it takes to be a certified harbor pilot, of course.
If a ship that size lost power right at that point in the harbor, it doesn't matter what the pilot was, or even if there's a couple tugs alongside. That ship is going to keep going whichever way velocity, inertia, and current will take it. All you can do is perhaps slow it down some.
