I drove from N.J. to Wyoming for the last one.
I was looking to drive as far as San Antonio for this one. It looks like that would be a waste of time, energy and $700. or so.

(637 posts)My extended family is in Texas, so the eclipse is giving us a good reason to go back to see people. Partly cloudy is called for on the 8th, but I still have hope!

(5,294 posts)I could have gone anywhere in the States, but always wanted to see Montreal. I'm aware that it may get rained out, but I figure I'd it does, I'll still be in Montreal, getting Smoked Meat for my birthday.
Besides, weather forecasts two weeks out are guesswork

(14,902 posts)Love your... "I'll be in Montreal" POV should the eclipse be hidden by clouds.
Hopefully not, though! 👍

(19,564 posts)They've already paid exorbitant amounts for their lodgings here. I know a gentleman who told me he had all of his rental homes on LBJ rented out for $5k a night with a 5 night minimum. I realize they sleep multiple people, but still... that's just nuts.
They'll be coming be it hell, high water or the predicted partly cloudy day.
If nothing else, it's going to be interesting being in the path of totality for an eclipse.
I hope you're doing well!

(57,089 posts)... are fixed but one and she will not allow herself to be caught. The males are too healthy to be caught. After the mess in Granite Shoals is under control, I'm going to pay one of the groups to catch, spay and release back in my yard. After three bites with trying to catch them, my wife says, "no more."
We are sheltering in place. I don't even know if I am going out on the back deck to see it or not. I ignored the last one.

(13,553 posts)We're right in the middle of it. My kids and families are coming from the west coast.
We're worried about the number of people who will be showing up around the eclipse path. If you haven't booked a hotel you won't be able to. If you can find a rental car they're saying the ones that are left are going for $500/day. And the roads and freeways will be packed.
We normally go and eat in restaurants when my kids are here, but this time we're planning on getting enough food in to feed 4 more hungry mouths and since my other son is coming with his wife's parents as well we may have to have enough to feed an army. LOL

(12,382 posts)Rapid City, S.D. and planned to drive to Laramie. Along the way, there were hundreds of cars and campers parked along a highway, outside of Laramie. I pulled over and joined them -- had a great time.
Good thing, too. Reports were that it took two hours to get out of Laramie, after the eclipse.
The point is, you don't have to be in a major city to see the event. You can stay outside of the path, get up and drive to it.

(13,553 posts)Arkansas or Missouri. Even so, the highways leading to path totality are likely to be very busy. In Texas along the path it's very populated, a lot of urban sprawl with very large suburbs. It's likely to be packed even if you're 50 miles from a big city. Many people are flying in and renting cars they reserved when they were available and since airports are in the populated areas anymore, they'll be contributing to the craziness.
It will indeed be a once in a lifetime experience.

(25,337 posts)Del Rio is the driest. However, April in Texas is unpredictable.
Mexico is a much better bet. All the scientists are going to Durango, Mexico. The mountains and very dry air will make optimal viewing conditions.
I'm in San Antonio. I should have 2 minutes at my house, but I'm heading to Boerne about 35 miles up the road. (I have family there)
I heard everything is booked here.

Sheesh. Have a bowl of corn flakes. Sit by the fire. Read a book.
The forecast will change 5 times before you are bored.

(16,960 posts)I live in s.e. Ohio, and read we'd get 95% effect. I was invited to go, but I'd rather stay here. We saw the one in the 1990s. If it wasn't 100% effect here, it was close. I got home from work in time to see the shadow on a plate my husband attached to his telescope he set up in our yard.
