100s of books were found trashed outside elementary school with sticky notes explaining rejection reason

this happened in NY

Spiegel was shocked to discover sticky notes on the books explaining why they had not been approved

A note on The Derby Daredevils stated it was not approved because it “discusses dad being transgender” and “teenage girls having a crush on another girl in class.”

One of the children’s books, Julian is a Mermaid, said “boy questions gender.”

Hundreds of books were recently found in the trash outside a Staten Island elementary school. The books were in boxes labeled “not approved” and were filled with stories featuring LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and people of color.

On a book entitled We Are Still Here! Native American Truths Everyone Should Know, a note declared, “negative slant on white people.”

And one about a boy living on the U.S.-Mexico border said, “Our country has no room and it’s not fair.”

Parents at the school have also spoken out against banning the books.

“I don’t know why the books would be thrown out,” said Alissa Barakakos. “I want my kid to be a part of the school community where everything is open and honest and kids are being educated.”

One advocate – Natasha Capers, the director of the Coalition for Educational Justice – was outraged about a trashed Black Panther book being labeled “Witchcraft? Human skulls.”

from Moms for Liberty University.

Though I’ll hold my judgement until more details come out. I’m a librarian and there’s a lot of talk on school librarian social media about banning books coming from school administrators, to appease vocal nutjob parents. And we also know nutjobs have invaded our school systems. If you have a mountain of student loans and you need benefits, people are feeling pressure to stay in the jobs even as their jobs become eviscerated.

it wasn't thelibrarian who did all that, but an administrator - or a MAGA school board member.

As far as a degree is concerned, I expect each states have their own rules on what credentials are required for which jobs. I can think of a few states I would not expect an elementary school librarian to have a degree in Library Science. All of them, owever, do contain good people (though maybe not in the majority), so i won't name names.

This is the second time this week that I've clicked on a link to an article at msn.com and gotten a page with the article title and byline and not much else except ads and clutter. I don't see anything to click on to see the rest of the article. Is there some kind of secret "trick" you have to know to read an article on that site, or what? I'm using Google Chrome on an Android tablet, if that makes any difference.

I enjoyed reading that. I hope they get to the bottom of why those books were chucked out.

I would still like to know why I can't see the articles at man.com on my device, though. Maybe someone else will know.

I remember the old Goethals Bridge, imagining Orson Wells' Martians knocking it down with death rays.

I was a little kid when we drove over it to get to my grandparents in New Jersey.

And one of his first actions was to get new books for the children in the segregated Black schools. He never knew that there was any "difference" between him and his neighborhood friends until they started going to different schools.

Miss Lillian kept saying "Jimmy's so naive!" But he exposed the corruption and he won. I have Jimmy Carter's autobiography, "A Full Life: Reflections at 90," and recommend it highly. He really has led an amazing and full life. And he's always been my favorite.

When Jimmy Carter took office, he promised to always tell the truth, so the press kept checking every statement he made for some hint of untruth. And now there's actual support in this country for a liar who wouldn't know the truth if he fell over it. And where's the press now?

And yes, I've had Jimmy Carter as an avatar since we had avatars - except for two brief switches to John Conyers when he joined DU (at CatWoman's request) and the Ukraine avatar when everybody else did. But when I saw him at Rosalynn's funeral, I knew I had to go back. He turns 100 on October first!

Specifically, I live in a suburb of Buffalo.

Buffalo can be a political battleground. Where I live local elections are extremely close and that's why it's imperative to vote in every election.

I looked up to see what the majority of registered voters were for Staten Island, the numbers have went up in recent years for registered R's and it seems like the Democratic voters don't vote down the line. This article is dated for 2022.
