Modi rival held in custody over corruption claims amid street protests.

A court in India sent Delhi’s top politician Arvind Kejriwal to seven days in judicial custody of an investigative agency on Friday in a massive setback to the country’s opposition against Narendra Modi in the upcoming general elections.

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s chief minister and a fierce political rival to prime minister Modi, will now be questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over corruption allegations.

The financial crime agency on Thursday night arrested Kejriwal, an anti-corruption campaigner who heads the Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man’s Party), in connection with graft allegations relating to the capital city’s liquor policy. Kejriwal is the first serving chief minister to be arrested in India.

The arrest has been labelled as a crackdown against Indian opposition leaders by the Modi administration ahead of the General Assembly elections to elect a new government starting in April.

Corruption, intrigue, politics, authoritarianism, unrest...

You'd think it were here.

I don't have a clue who is in the wrong here though. Likely they all are.

I do, because I have an interest in what is going on in India (primarily with following what is (not) being done about all the India Scam Call Centers that are stealing BILLIONS annually from our Elders). Seems that the police there are Corrupt (they get paid off to look the other way by the scam call center owners), and here in America, the authorities say they can't do anything because they are from another country, it is out of their hands, and the people who were scammed gave them permission to access their (computers, i.e. banks, etc.) It is a very frustrating situation. The best thing we can do is try to educate our elders on how to identify scammers, or how to avoid them all together. Sorry for digressing.......

Back to your question: I don't think most Americans know squat about who the leaders in India are, nor do they care. Very sad. But along those lines, /I/ don't understand the politics of India. I know religion plays a large part of their politics, but I don't know if Modi is right or left (although, with this kind of post, I'm guessing he is more right-wing and fascist than I had previously thought)

I know there are those whose religion is Hindu, I believe there are also many Muslims. I am guessing that there are also many Buddhists (as Buddha, (Siddhartha Gautama) was born there), along with some other Dharmas. I used to work with the Sikhs that owned a movie theater in Maui back in the 70s) But that is about as far as my own personal knowledge goes.

I love the Hindu and Buddhist cultures, and I have worked with many Americans with ancestry from India. I consider them people of the highest caliber. Kind, Loving, Great Work Ethics. I'm pointing this out to make sure to note that I have nothing against people from India when I am discussing this scammer call center issue. There is great poverty there, and it is difficult to find a decent paying job (which is why so many young people are able to be used in these scam centers).

my .02 cents

with serious authoritarian tendencies. He used cicke administration to claw his way o hte op - even managed to have the massive stadium named after himself.
There is both state and national corruption but he has orchestrated some of the worst political victimization in Indian political history (outside of British colonial India)

The US in general keeps thinking of India as a developing country because of the income inequality and caste system. India is a developed country -as developed as China - and in my opinion, better positioned than China to grow itself separate from the "West" or any other country's sphere of influence.
The fact there is poverty and dusty, "dirty" urban rural locations does not necessarily mean the country altogether is poor. People can point to the amount of homelessness, medical bankruptcy, and areas of rural poverty in the US and and come to a similar conclusion about our country.

No

I pointed out years ago that both India and China have significantly larger populations than anywhere in the West and can thrive on their own.

That has nothing to do with the increasingly undemocratic machinations of Modi. I am acttually a fan of democracy

The Kremlin has never been richer – thanks to a US strategic partner

Russia is entering its third year of war in Ukraine with an unprecedented amount of cash in government coffers, bolstered by a record $37 billion of crude oil sales to India last year...

This flow of payments, ultimately to Moscow’s benefit, comes from India increasing its purchases of Russian crude by over 13 times its pre-war amounts...

There is a lot of corruption in India so it wouldn't be hard to believe officials engaged in wrongdoing . People can also be bought off into doing things.
