As Bibi Netanyahu, Putin, Hitler and others have demonstrated, the best way for a dictator to tighten hold on power is to stir up a war. In Israel Netanyahu appears to have-through action or inaction-set the stage for Hamas to initiate a provocation. That gave him reason to declare a state of emergency and to rain war down on Gaza. The apparatus of democracy there is not adequate to rein him in. He continues to demonstrate his power with that recent land grab in the West Bank.
Putin just won reelection with a totally improbable percent of the vote. His war powers have long given him the ability to arrest or harass anyone who might be in opposition so none was registered at the polls. I neednt go on describing how Hitler and other dictators have used war to control their populations.
Trump has already said that hell declare a state of emergency if elected. God knows what crazy shit he and the jackals circling around him will get up to, but it wont be good. For one thing, as with all Republican presidencies following a Democratic one, the economy will start to spiral down. Even his cult will begin to realize that his presidency is a disaster for everyone.
Rather than lose his grip, TFG would surely turn to that well worn page in the dictators playbook: war. He wont go to war with Russia, China, or North Korea. Theyre his pals. Instead, hell turn to the border where his rhetoric has already been bellicose, belligerent, and martial. Hes said that the US should send missiles into Mexico targeting the cartels. Ron DeSantis and Niki Haley have both proposed sending troops to fight the cartels, fentanyl producers and human smugglers. The stage is set. TFG and his minions are dumb enough to do it.
Imagine what that would be like! The instant closure of our border with our largest trading partner would destroy the economy in about a week. When you think of the American border cities that are in range should Mexico decide to retaliate look at pictures of Gaza. And what about the millions of good US citizens with relatives and familial ties to folks in Mexico who could become innocent victims of any American incursion. How would they be treated? And what would be their reaction? Shit show. Total shit show. But as I said, TFG and his minions are dumb enough to do it.

(3,785 posts)And isn't that a very sad commentary on our country at the moment. Things have been happening that, once upon a time, I would have argued until I was red in the face, that no way would anyone in this country doing that. I miss my delusions. I know now that there may not be anything that is beyond these people. War with Mexico? Oh, yeah, I can see that happening without too much trouble. If they are willing to kill woman for trying to save their own lives, war with our long time neighbor is easy to contemplate. I really do miss my delusions.

(1,342 posts)When we think about another TFG presidency I think we tend to think in abstracts like, end to democracy, destruction of our justice syste,, etc. Its important to do some thinking about what it will mean as a practical matter, what it will mean to us right outside our door. I live in a part of America that was once part of the Kingdom of Spain and then Mexico. My neighbors are already vilified by the right. How much worse can it get for them if the TFG is elected? And if it gets worse for them, what does that mean for me.
TFG and his minion are so delusional and dumb-witness their take on climate change and Covid-that no bad act is beyond them. Can I see a run up to war with Mexico? Yes. Too easily. Even just a few years ago I would have said it was unthinkable. Not now.
