As kid we used to play with liquid mercury. One favourite thing was to rub it onto copper pennies - it would coat the copper with mercury leaving it bright and shiny. We used to play with the damned things carry the them around in our pockets.

The only saving grace I guess is that mercury in the liquid form is not nearly as toxic as many mercury compounds. Dimethyl mercury for one - a liquid that if in contact with the skin, for only a short while, can kill in small quantities (a drop or two).

With that said, I can't help but suggest that there's more than one entity and one motivation behind the need for one group of people to try to control another. I think a broader look at society and a deeper look at human nature strongly suggests it.
