I think we need to talk about the fact that Twitter links are not available to everyone.
First and foremost, Twitter is a shit show, essentially 4Chan, literally owned by a misogynistic, racist, bigoted drug addict.
Practically speaking, Twitter links no longer work for us that no longer have a Twitter account. Can't watch videos from Twitter or read past what is visible in the Twitter post, with no ability to expand or scroll.
I know there are still some on Twitter but I think it's becoming increasingly clear that Musk and Twitter are toxic and continuing to use them as a reference is untenable to me.
To me it would be nice if links from places like Threads worked the same as the Twitter and didn't just show up as a simple hyperlink. I also realize I don't have any frame of reference for any technical issues with making that happen but it would be nice.

(21,756 posts)I don't have one and can see the posts and view videos just fine on both my desk top and my phone.

(8,699 posts)And I can see the Twitter OP but if I try to run the video it just takes me to a Twitter login page.
That is a more recent phenomenon though.

(21,756 posts)I'd say about 60% of the time I can see them just fine in the post but on occasion, it takes me to twitter with the black login box you describe that covers the tweet but.... It has an 'X' to close it in the upper right hand corner. I close it and I can view it with no other hindrance.

(9,373 posts)And fyi, I mentioned that Threads posts are only showing up as a link a couple of weeks ago. As far as I know, nothing came from that. Hopefully it will eventually.

(21,949 posts)We can't do any development at the moment because the only thing we can focus on is the required database update, which failed when we last attempted it, and which has since become a significantly more complex project than originally anticipated. So at this time Twitter links are going to remain as they are, and Threads links will not render the same way that Twitter links do. We would have to make updates to the code in order to change any of that stuff, which we cannot do at the moment.
That said, even if we could make changes to the way social media sites are displayed on DU, we would still need to do a review of the situation to determine if we even want to make any changes. If and when we get to that point I'll let you know. In the meantime I'm going to lock this, thanks.
