Liz Cheney Still Hopes to Play a Role Stopping Trump

"SNIP..............

David Ignatius: “What difference will Cheney’s passionate opposition make? It’s hard to say, given the way Trump has turned traditional political alignments upside down. But maybe she’s a voice for the many Republicans (not to mention independents) who are resisting the Trump cult. She’s an antiabortion, pro-gun, anti-tax conservative. But she thinks those policy differences are less important in November than defending the Constitution — which means stopping Trump.”

“Cheney said she hasn’t decided yet whether it makes sense to formally endorse Biden. But she has pledged to work until Election Day to “educate” Americans about how dangerous Trump is. At a time when some Democrats are trying to push Biden to the left, Cheney is a reminder that this election, like most, will be won in the middle, where polls show Trump is vulnerable.”

I think she believes she may be able to defeat Trump and restore the GOP to its former position.
And is positioning herself as a leader in the new cleaned out GOP.

IMO, she should continue to speak out clearly saying why voting for Trump (and his sycophants) is a huge mistake from a conservative traditional Republican perspective and encourage people to vote. Really, Haley should do the same.

Doing so would demonstrate that there is a wide bipartisan consensus on Trump’s unfitness to serve, the dangers to democracy, and this election is more than a horse race popularity contest.

Speaking out against Trump as dangerous and incompetent.

But she does not trash her conservative values or ideals.
She cannot be seen to align with Biden.

She must preserve her standing as a legit GOPer.

Then she can run for office again. (But we will have to defeat her.)

But I give her full credit for standing up to Trump and the weak MAGA leaders.
I think it is a bit self serving of her, but a huge gamble. She could win or lose big.

is in some part due to Republicans like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger speaking out. Temporary allies, for sure, but welcome right now.

A number of ex Trump aides are also speaking out.

And yes of course, their work is very much appreciated.
They do so at great risk.

and much more willing to believe her, if she maintains her R creds.

She's a strange bedfellow, all right, but I'll embrace anyone who wants to squash the vile thing.

She's a brave woman.

Yes Liz speaks out at great personal and professional risk.
She is quite brave.

However, I think it is a bit self-serving. She is gambling that she can emerge as
her party's prime leader when the dust settles and Trump is wiped out of the party.

But of course I admire her bravery and chutzpah.

Does she hate him because he is evil, or because he took over her party and robbed her of
a chance to be POTUS herself?

Maybe a combination of both.

She is ambitious.

She is now gambling big time trying to wipe him out of the party.
Which would clear the path for her.

She is positioning herself as the leader of the new GOP.

Neither of those options makes sense to me. I suspect there is another meaning to your post, but I can't see it.

And her family’s role in bringing about the current situation. I was also expressing my sympathies and appreciation for the effort the poster is showing to the larger effort to remove the vile thing by holding off on Cheney until we win or fall.

I have my own personal grudges against her Dad and his pal Rumsfeld I’m holding back on for common good.

She needs to get her dad to call Geoirge W Bush. He can break this fever IMO if he came out strongly against Trump. I know Bush hates Trump as much as anyone does, but he's too much of a coward to speak about it publicly.

Not even sure Ronald Reagan would make a difference right now. The GOP has really gone off the rails.
