Trumps GOP is already dying
Donald Trumps MAGA ideology can now claim the House Speakership and formal control of the RNC. With Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) stepping down from his role as Senate minority leader, Trump will likely soon control that post as well.
...
Trumps GOP is a paradox. The former president now enjoys an unprecedented level of control over the Republican national apparatus. He can freely raid the RNCs dwindling campaign coffers for legal defense money and appoint family members to key positions while personally directing House Republicans disastrous investigations into Joe and Hunter Biden. Trumps total dominance of the Republican Party is a remarkable thing to behold.
...
One RNC donor, Peter Henlein, voiced many Republicans outrage at the new arrangement in a post on X, formerly Twitter. After a lifetime of donating to every GOP nominee and multiple down ballot candidates every cycle .Im out, Henlein wrote. I donated to help win elections, not to maintain the lifestyle of a billionaire.
Much much more...

(4,500 posts)to turn out voters!!! Not just advertising, but for GOTV operations. The Republican Party in my state of Michigan is BROKE right now, and their big donors in this state are not kicking in so far, have indeed been chased away by the MAGAt wing.
Women and young people carried our party to victory in the 22 midterms in Michigan, by 11 points for the Governor's re-election, and took over the state government for the first time in 40 years! (in the year of the "Red Wave midterm fantasy" )
I don't think those voters are going to stay home in "Rovember," and Democrats have been over-performing in all the special and off-year elections.
We have all that in our favor, to start with---
but with Michigan, Arizona and possibly other state GOP parties in bad financial condition,
and Trump now sucking up ALL of the money from the National GOP,
this is not going to be a "level playing field" for Republicans in 2024!
Wish I could cite a link here, but it was a story on my phone's newsapp--
There is a pro-Biden PAC which is committed to spending $250 million in advertising on this election!
That's more than twice as much money as President Biden and the Trump campaign now have as cash on hand, put together!
I'd rather be US than the Republicans right now,
even if they currently look better in *some* polls---
(and I think that will change before November!)

(81,566 posts)I look forward to that day. But I also remain vigilant about what might replace the RNC if and when it finally bites the dust. Somehow better, at long last, or WORSE?

(7,194 posts)shaky at best. The Silent generation was very reliably conservative/Republican (they loved them some Ronnie Raygun), but their voting power is getting to the "almost insignificant" stage as their numbers dwindle drastically (and it wasn't a large generation to begin with). Boomers have already lost a third of their members, and the oldest will hit 80 in less than two years. My generation, Gen X, kinda sucks politically (we old Xers came of age when Reagan got elected, and too many of my peers drink the Kool Aid), but, like the Silent Gen, we are not a large generation, and the Xers born in the '70s seem to be less right wing than the 60s-born Xers. (Yes, these are all sweeping generalities.) Those born after 1980, again, in general, do not seem to buy into propaganda as those born in the early-to-mid 20th century. And, of course, the younger generations are much more educated and much less white and much less religious. They are PISSED OFF about Dobbs, global warming, gun violence, etc., especially the young women, who will outvote the males. So, in the future, good luck to any political party relying solely on pre-1980-born white, rural, non-college, mostly male, practicing Christian voters. It will have a massively uphill battle. There just aren't enough of those types around to maintain anything other than scattered regional power, and they're getting scarcer by the day.

(81,566 posts)The dynamics you cite seem to make all kinds of sense. Just this latter-day "invasion of the body snatchers" against a woman's right to rule her own body should be enough. But there's so much more beyond that.

(1,698 posts)That being said, the Party of Lincoln abandoned Black Americans with the end of Reconstruction. White, conservative businessmen in the North wanted to do business with the South and dismantling Reconstruction allowed that to happen.

Even if every GOP were to vanish into Vapor, the hate and greed and stupidity the GOP represents would find someone to revive it. It is not a matter of stomping out the flames, it is a matter the we have to KEEP stomping!

(12,882 posts)This has never been about "Making America Great Again" or helping the deluded fools who vote for Don the Con.
It has always been about the personal interests, lust for wealth & power, and filling a bottomless void within the giant but fragile ego of a sociapathic malignant narcissist -- and those with an agenda riding the coattails of the megalomaniac.
That such a creature exists is not surprising, but his capture of the Republican Party speaks volumes about the degradation its members and voters.

(6,242 posts)But the temptation to grab RNC cash was irresistible.
This action does massive damage to the RNC and it's fundraising ability,
Peter Henlein probably speaks for a lot of the major donors.
They'll either donate directly to individual campaign PACS, or close their wallets.
Somehow I get the feeling that Trump doesn't have any where near the wealth he claims.
Of course he's going to be broke when those judgments are finally paid.
I would love to see Mar-a-Lago on the block.

(50,554 posts)The Republican Party has been on its last legs for at least the past 40 years, yet they still control the judiciary, many state legislatures, many governorships, and half the congress.
Ill believe that Trumps GOP or any GOP is dying when they are a tiny, impotent minority that dole can barely remember.

But I can't wait for every "pundit" who went on and on about Biden's age and low poll numbers to have to admit they were wrong. Not holding my breath, of course.

(8,750 posts)There is no such thing as a "good" Republican. They are all cowardly sycophants. All this talk of donors backing out is ridiculous. That donor Peter Henlein they quoted will likely get a visit from some "nice" gentleman from the RNC and he will have a sudden change of heart and double his normal contributions. They always fold. Republicans have no morals, ethics or spines.

Don't sit back and gloat just cuz stinky is eating the pie in the cupboard. The oligarchs will grease the skids at the right time.
The rnc hasn't really been a critical player since citizens united. Useful, but not critical.
