I might be hanging too much on one speech and a good week, as well as Trump's dislocation during speeches an inviting authoritarians to his home, but I sense a seismic shift is beginning (or accelerating).
Am I wrong?

(5,131 posts)We can not let our guard down. Even if trump loses, they will not go away. We need to accept that at least 1/3 of this country is bigoted and would rather see an authoritarian in power than give all Americans true equality.

(43,430 posts)Common sense and the American middle has reasserted itself. We still have work to do on paranoia and stupidity and right wing news, but our solid foundation has surfaced and mainstream folks will flock to it.
Love how Joe Biden's speeches are laced with, "Folks!" when he wants you to pay attention. He is so genuine. He's not Joe because he wears a hat or a red tie. He's Joe because he connects with working people, which is most of us.

(35,424 posts)the people we need to convince didn't watch it. His speech will be forgotten in a matter of days. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.

(14,340 posts)which would reach more people. They have done this in the past. They make for a great ad. Thursday gave them a lot more to work with.
It's true that he stepped on a few of his best lines. But he will be returning to those themes on the campaign trail, and clips from those can be edited in seamlessly for a rousing effect in an ad.
So although the people who needed to hear the speech didn't watch it, there will be opportunities to present them with Joe's messages in shorter sound bites several more times before November.

(20,782 posts)And deteriorating the power of the disease. Even from the start, we had 25-30% monarchists. They've always been there. Trouble is or election system affords too much electoral power to rural agricultural states that have more corn than voters. So we have to over-win to beat them.

(19,360 posts)To most, I think, Trump has begun to sound boring (after all, howl long can outrage and childishness remain the center of gravity?) and MAGA has begun to seem old, last decade's fad.
What I mean by "most," is all but MAGA (true conservatives, independents, etc.), 65-70% of the rest of the country.

(3,050 posts)The first would likely get us the House back. The second we could use to disarm the Repugs on things like immigration and debt concern. Just being the party of action rather than the party of complaint and conspiracy is our edge and sanity can win out over insanity and endless dysfunction. I know fix gerrymandering is not a few months project...it's years. But there has been a start.

(272 posts)You are correct. Paxton wants to be Attorney General of the US. His office spent more than $6 million dollars so far on frivolous lawsuits. Abbott is also looking at Attorney General. Abbott was the Attorney General of Texas prior to Paxton and engaged in the same frivolous lawsuits. To date, Abbott has spent $6 billion on the border, and approximately the population of Waco has died due to Covid.
Most of the $6 billion was from unspent Covid funds. You remember the money that was to help mom and pop stores, restaurants, etc. Abbott quickly ran out of Covid money so he began shifting money from social services to make up the shortfall.
How do you fix stupid? I dont have a clue.

(306 posts)You ask a good and important question. Maybe a scarier way of asking the same question, and I dare say a more direct way of asking, would be to say, How many traits of fascism are we seeing play out in our country? I dare say we are in the orange zone still and not far from red. Our freedoms are being chipped away (roe, voting rights, gerrymandering, support of Putin and orange blofus, people voicing out loud(!) that they want a strongman leader, speeches by blofus designed to divide, disinformation powered by social media and other countries (!), efforts to weaken govt. and the list goes on. Bidens speech was wonderful but my hope is that the voters will be so moved to the polls. I am afraid that third party candidate(s) will suck the air from Joe. I am still greatly concerned.
To sum up my meandering reply, I think because we are in so deep right now that a shift the other way is going to be marked by critical milestones (Biden winning, getting control of congress) and a slow but steady reduction in hate and all the other things that have gone astray. Long road ahead. Sometimes I wonder how we got here in my lifetime.
To end on a positive, Joe is awesome!

(752 posts)Their racism, misogyny, xenophobia, nationalism and hatred have become too obvious to ignore.
They won't disappear but they will just change their their logos and invent new conspiracy theories for the gullible and frightened.
They say they need a "Strong Leader" to save them from the Bogeymen and have now selected a n (allegedly) billionaire who's main shtick is playing the victim and whining and attempting to convince the working class that he's on their side he's one of them.
