On Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson won the GOP primary to become his partys nominee for North Carolina governor, presumably with the help of female voters.
But just four years ago, Robinson invoked a bizarre hypothetical in which he said hed absolutely like to return to the days when the 19th Amendment didnt exist ― when women didnt have the right to vote.
I absolutely want to go back to the America where women couldnt vote, Robinson said in a newly resurfaced video of his remarks at a March 2020 event hosted by the Republican Women of Pitt County.
During this event, Robinson, who was running for lieutenant governor at the time, recalled someone recently asking conservative activist Candace Owens to pick which version of America would make America great again, one where Black people were swinging from cheap trees or one where women werent allowed to vote.
Robinson said he would definitely return to the days in America when women were denied the right to vote because in those days we had people who fought for real social change, and they were called Republicans.

(45,580 posts)There's a stupid Youtuber who repeatedly claims America would be more conservative if women couldn't vote. She's a woman and claims women make bad decisions and life was easier before feminists decided women have to work.

(16,100 posts)The 19th Amendment was passed by Congress in 1919 and ratified by the Senate in 1920...and black men, women, and children had no rights!
This was the vote in the Senate
20 Democrats Yea
17 Democrats Nay
9 Democrats Not voting/abstained
36 Republicans Yea
8 Republicans Nay
5 Republicans Not voting/abstained
And someone should point out that it was Southern Democrats who opposed giving women the right to vote...and we all know that those Southern Democrats, are the ancestors of Southern Republicans!

(2,600 posts)This is the kind of rhetoric that may make cavemen feel good, but it's going to enrage women and drive a big turnout, likely greater than they've ever seen. And this is fucking NORTH CAROLINA. It's one of the most educated states in the nation. What the hell? All he needs to say on top of this is that he wants to take away all the women's shoes and hand them a damn broom.

(3,010 posts)Many of those who fought for voting rights prior to the First World War were indeed Republicans. This was, of course, in the days when the Democrats were dominated by the Southern arm that was focused on maintaining Jim Crow. Woodrow Wilson was perhaps the most racist president of the 20th century - and given some of the other luminaries filling that role before 2000 (*cough* Reagan *cough*), that's saying something.
The real irony is that the current Republican Party wants to move back to these days not to rejoin the fight for social justice, but to bring back the reasons it had to be fought in the first place. They've adopted the mantle not of the progressive-minded Republicans of the prewar era, but of their Dixiecrat opponents.
I'm reminded of the scene in Clockwork Orange, where Alex, upon reading the Bible as a sign of personal improvement, is shown imagining himself not as Jesus Christ, but as one of the Roman guards whipping him.
Added on edit to clarify - I am not, in any way, defending the NC-GOV candidate, nor am I defending the modern Republican Party in any way. I'm just pointing out that the broader scope of history allows modern charlatans to make rhetorical points, especially if historical facts are stripped of their context.
