(19,204 posts)does it say presidents, sitting or past, have absolute immunity from the law?
I'll have to re-read my copy. I must have missed it.

(4,463 posts)from the grant of cert. Its unnecessary since it would not prevent it, and it would give the other 6 a starting point for their bullshit. Even a simple, no opinion I dissent would be an unnecessary signal that would fan flames. They should save their ammunition for now.

(307 posts)This is my message:
The United States Supreme Court is supposed to be above politics, and beyond the highly corrupting reach of billionaire donors to Justices. It is deeply alarming that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments concerning Donald Trump's claim of immunity from federal criminal prosecution. As the DC Circuit wrote concerning this matter, "We cannot accept that the office of the Presidency places its former occupants above the law for all time thereafter."
Neither can the American people. The possibility is beyond comprehension. It could mean the end of the Republic.
The credibility and legitimacy of the Court are at stake.
The nation and the world are watching.

(68 posts)I'll be surprised if the public perception of the Supreme Court doesn't fall even further than the current dismal approval measure. Taking away women's autonomy was unimaginable; considering that a single individual is immune from criminal prosecution is worse. The activism, the lack of ethics, the arrogance (followed by Trump-like whining about how mean people are to you) are the self-same characteristics of narcissism and privilege that define the former President (and obviously your Supreme Leader). I don't wish you good luck, nor do I urge you to do better--I don't think it is within your character. My only hope is that a changing electorate may lead to term limits, an enforceable code of ethics, and an increase in the number of justices that will place you in a minority.

(2,703 posts)I am not so arrogant to believe I understand the law, constitution, and case details which the court takes actions.
However, I do believe I understand corruption must be behind some of the recent decisions of the court. Specifically, the Roe vs Wade, Presidential Immunity, and Amendment 14.
Not to mention the Honorable Clarence Thomas not recusing himself on topics his wife is part of the undertow.
Democracy in the U.S. should not and cannot be part of a national election. Please do not let other influences take precedence over what is the core of our existence.

In short, ripping it up and rewriting it.
Might as well call them "The Gang of Six"
I do suggest that they resign out of shame for the known and unknown as of yet bribes and grifts. They have tainted the office pretty much beyond repair. It would take a welcome restocking with people interested in upholding the constitution for "WE THE PEOPLE" rather than a handful of feudal lords and corrupt popes from the past (like whom they seem to have patterned their behavior)

(145 posts)My note:
Dear Chief Justice Roberts,
Yesterday, you once again proved that the Supreme Court does not care about the rule of law when it involves a member of your own party. First, you denied the special counsel's request to provide an expedited ruling on Donald J. Trump's request for absolute immunity. After a unanimous ruling that denied the very idea of absolute immunity by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court then sat on yet another Trump appeal for weeks. Yesterday, the Court finally acted and came out with this one-page ruling that grants the plaintiff (Donald J. Trump) the right to argue this absurd immunity idea before the court on an expedited basis. Only expedited in this case means seven weeks from the date the order was issued. This is delay for the sake of making sure this case never goes to trial before the election. If Trump is re-elected, this case and democracy will descend into the abyss led by the Roberts Court.
You do not have to be a lawyer or an expert on Constitutional law to know that absolute immunity is antithetical to the very idea of democracy. It is hard to imagine how the court will do anything to clarify or improve upon the opinion already drafted by the D.C. Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court should have denied Trump's application to the court in order for this case to go to trial prior to the election . Instead, this court meddled in yet another election where the consequences of your inaction and delay will be immensely consequential. If you wonder why the public has such a low opinion of this court, it is because your decisions are not driven by the law or public service. This court's action is nothing more than a blatant partisan move.

(2 posts)Obama had the choice to make a recess appointment to the Supreme Court when the Senate was out of session late in 2016. He chose the nice guy route and McConnell took full advantage. When will Democrats get mean and stay firm? Republicans dont have any problem exercising extra-democratic means to get what they want. When will we grow a spine? I say, lets protest in front of the homes of the Gang of Six.

(100,131 posts)Fox News is the worst thing that's happened to the United States since the Civil War. They are destroying 250 years of American democracy for ratings and profit. Right wing representatives and senators are basically nothing more than glorified content creators for Fox. It's truly sickening. I don't think this country will ever begin to heal until we start denouncing the dangers of Fox and start working to de-Fox our government. It's not a news network, it's a hostile political entity and an existential threat to the interests of the United States.

(13,189 posts)The Supreme Court wrongfully prohibited the counting of all votes for the president in 2000. To benefit Republicans.
You now seek to tie the hands of the courts holding a domestic enemy accountablea man trying to topple the US government. To benefit Republicans.
You swore to administer justice, without respect to persons; to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic; and to take the obligation freely, without mental reservation or purpose of evasion.
Your actions do not align with your oath.
Please uphold the oath that you took for the nation instead of for your political party.

(5,032 posts)I'm curious. Did the 30 pieces of silver cover all the betrayals so far or are you getting 30 pieces of silver for each betrayal? Maybe its 30 pieces a year to cover that entire years worth of betrayals? I'm curious about the current going rate for betraying progressive ideals and values.

(9,269 posts)This Supreme Court is guilty of obstruction of justice...
In the January 6th insurrection case and the charges against Donald Trump and the question of his immunity, the court's inserting themselves in this case at all and particularly given the timing issue - is obstruction of justice. It is defacto giving Mr. Trump immunity even though the Court *may* eventually rule he has no immunity in this case. Because of the timing, he will likely enjoy full immunity anyway. Americans believe the Court knows this and that this in fact why this Court is inserting themselves into this process. It is a political, not a legal decision.
Not only that, but they are also violating Section 3 of the 14th Amendment by keeping Mr. Trump on the ballot nationwide when it is clear that he should not be. The Court has not ruled on this yet. But they will and Mr. Trump will remain on the ballots because this court will create a justification for it.
It is no secret that Clarence Thomas and his wife, Ginni, assisted the insurrectionists on January 6th, 2021. Justice Thomas should by all rights and anything resembling ethics, recuse himself. But he arrogantly will not do so.
By obstructing Donald Trump going to trial in the January 6th case so that they can allegedly ruminate on his "immunity" for trying to overthrow the US gov't and overturn a legitimate election, the present Justices are "aiding and abetting" the insurrectionists and they are violating their oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Instead, they are defending themselves, their political party, and Mr. Trump.
I assure you that this institution has lost all credibility with the US public and these kinds of actions, and the overturning of Roe v Wade, gutting of the Voting Rights Act and other clearly partisan and/ or religious rulings are why, along with the complete absence and enforcement of any ethics code or rules whatsoever. The Court is seen as a political arm of the GOP and little else. That is its behavior. And that is clearly seen by everyone especially Donald Trump who goes whining to this Court like a child to its mother every time someone rules against him.
SHAME.

(24,162 posts)Dear Justices:
In his dissent in Bush v. Gore, Justice Stevens famously wrote that the loser was clear: "It is the nations confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law.
In the years since that terrible decision, we've only seen more reason to lose confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court. It has been disheartening to see the tricks played in the Senate to deny nominations to Presidents Obama and Biden, the extremists appointed by Mr. Trump, and the court's resistance to ethical standards and transparency.
After rolling back voters' rights, civil rights, and women's rights to bodily autonomy, you are now poised to allow Mr. Trump to put himself above the law through a series of long delays. We heard his words to President Zelensky, to Georgia election officials, and to the rioters on January 6th. We saw the boxes of classified documents and heard his words about them; we saw him with Russian nationals in the White House when there were no American translators.
What is left to question? Mr. Trump should be put on trial without further delay. The American people deserve nothing less.
Sincerely,
madamesilverspurs

(3,555 posts)Telling them thanks for helping Biden get re-elected. Women will come out in droves to help elect democratic reps and Senators due to your Roe vote. Sorry, but the old saying is "be careful what you wish for because you just might get it." The repugs wanted Roe reversed, so you gave it to them. Now they all fear for jobs.
