The British and American air strikes on Yemen since January 12, launched with support from Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands among others, demonstrate yet again how most Western nations value their money and profit much more than human life.
Israels devastating war on Gaza, the first livestreamed genocide in history, has claimed more than 27,000 Palestinian lives, many of them children, since October 7. Most of the Gaza Strip has been reduced to rubble and over a million people have been displaced due to relentless and seemingly indiscriminate Israeli bombardment. The near-total siege on the Strip, meanwhile, brought survivors to the brink of starvation and forced doctors to perform amputations without anaesthetics using unsterile tools. In the face of this undeniable humanitarian catastrophe, Western governments took no meaningful action. In fact, both US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak repeatedly made it clear that they will continue to unconditionally support Israels onslaught on Gaza and efforts to eradicate Hamas whatever the human cost may be for the Palestinians.
In the end, it was not the killing and maiming of tens of thousands of civilians, but a number of non-fatal attacks by Yemens Houthi fighters on commercial ships passing through the strategically important Bab al-Mandeb Strait that sprung Western nations into action. Clearly, the dollars and pounds lost to the rapid rise in shipping costs caused by the attacks proved more valuable to the leaders of the free world than rivers of Middle Eastern blood.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which leads into the Red Sea and up to the Suez Canal, is one of the most crucial waterways for international trade. It is estimated that 12 percent of all global trade, including most exports of petroleum and natural gas from the Gulf, passes through the Strait, amounting to $1 trillion of commerce per year.
Interesting opinion, what is and is not said.

The plunder of resources and slaughter of humans by the West and its allies hasn't stopped for centuries and any people who fight back are called terrorists.
It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

(53,922 posts)There's no getting around it. It's hurting Biden's support in Michigan, a key battleground state with a large Arab and Muslim population.
IMO we should consider cutting the weapons supply to force warmonger Netanyahu to negotiate on ending the war.
He's taking a hard line and just today says that there will be no peace until Hamas is gone from Gaza and Israel with take it over.

There are no terrorists, just resistance and freedom fighters

(29,227 posts)"Western nations could have, of course, avoided all this and saved many, many Palestinian lives, by simply compelling Israel to put a stop to its genocide in Gaza and end its occupation of Palestinian territories. Rather than upsetting Israel by telling it to stop killing Palestinians, however, the leaders of the West decided to embark on yet another bombing campaign against one of the poorest countries in the world."
All of this could have, of course, been avoided if Hamas had not raped and murdered 1200 civilians on Oct 7th.
But the author never mentions WHY Israel is bombing the f**k out of Gaza ( or was, until a month ago, which is also never mentioned by the pro-Hamas side ). Nor does he mention the years where Israel left Gaza pretty much to their own devices so Hamas could take the money they got from Iran and others ( including relief aid) and buy weapons and build an extensive tunnel system under Gaza and train for the murders and the rapes and the killing by burning babies alive ( intentionally, individually... meaning some asshole stood over the babies in their cribs and DECIDED to burn them alive, or cut off the breasts before shooting the women in the vagina. He doesn't talk about that AT ALL.
But, of course, the US ( and the west ) could put a stop to Israel by snapping our fingers.
Exactly HOW would the "West" compel Israel to NOT strike back after the horrific slaughter... do we send the 101st to parachute in to the airbases and prevent Israel from flying their planes?
Cutting off aid would have unleashed the full fury of the IDF on Gaza. They would, rightly so, think that "we are in this alone, lets take the resources we already have and kill everyone until we are sure they can't ever try to attack us again... after all, everyone already is against us, what do we have to lose?"

(18,812 posts)To heap all fault on one side, and their allies, without even acknowledging there is another party involved.
If you had no knowledge of the last four months and this article was your only source, you would believe Israel woke up on October 7 and collectively decided to destroy Gaza. The "west" simply went along with this until heroic Houthis tried to bring attention to Israel's unprovoked attack.
