Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was the target of a swatting attempt at her Georgia residence on Christmas morning, the congresswoman and local police said, marking the latest instance of someone calling in a fake emergency to try to draw armed officers or SWAT teams to her home.
The Rome (Georgia) Police Department quickly verified that the call was a hoax and didn't send officers to the house, department spokesperson Kelly Madden said.
"I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here. My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn't have to deal with this," Greene wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
A man in New York called the Georgia suicide hotline just before 11 a.m. Monday, claiming he'd shot his girlfriend at the address of Greene's home and was going to kill himself next, Madden said. The call was quickly transferred to police when suicide hotline responders recognized the Georgia congresswoman's address.

(11,744 posts)Greene is completely despicable and if she happened to fall down a mine shaft, I would not be overly concerned. However, it is NEVER acceptable to use law enforcement as a weapon to terrorize people. While Greene is White and a privileged member of society by her wealth and status, and she would likely get the benefit of the doubt and treated with kid gloves by law enforcement; people die from "SWATting". It is not okay to do that ever, no matter how horrible a person is.
That said, I do question the validity of the report. I would imagine that police may have gone to the home to check on things, especially if the crisis line "recognized the Georgia congresswoman's address" That wouldn't qualify as "SWATting". It would be a nuisance call and misuse of public resources, but SWATting is when police show up at your house in full gear and weapons and breech to resolve and actively dangerous situation. Other tales of SWATting involve police breaking down doors, holding down inhabitants of a home at gunpoint, and clearing and securing space.
I have serious doubts that this has happened to Greene, especially 8 times. It would have been significant national news.
