3. It's not Epiphany. For a couple of weeks.

My mother was atheist.

But she was culturally aware and knew traditions. And was a bit rule-bound.

Day 1 = Xmas.Day. That's the day Xmas decorations get put up (or at least turned on). You celebrate *birth*, not pregnancy. A fervent pro-choice feminist, "You don't turn on the lights to celebrate the last night of a pregnancy." Xmas day the Xmas tree would be turned on--tested the night before, but only tested. You celebrate birth of infant or you celebrate fetus. Your choice.

Day 12 = Epiphany. 1/6. 12th day. Evening 1/5 is "twelfth night". Like Pesach is the night before the day of Pesach. Very pre-industrialist/pre-capitalist. Lights are on that evening, but you know, 12 days is enough. The Tanakh says days, 12s enough for the anointed.

Day 13, night after, decorations are culturally wrong. If they're up, do not electrify them--or you're a heathen. That would be like hamburgers with lime jello and marshmallows, mexican street tacos with cottage cheese and comeback sauce, or enchiladas rojas with sauerkraut and ketchup. Now, those might be edible, but I'm not willing to put them in my mouth.

Note the timeline is for "Catholic Xmas" or "Western Xmas." "Eastern Xmas" or "Orthodox Xmas" (which meant a bit more a year ago) celebrates 1/6 as the important day.

I'm not heterodox.

In fact, personally, I'm not Catholic and I'm not Orthodox and have scant use for Western (or Easterns) styles of Xianity. Some would say I've never been Xian. (And i'd reciprocate per Newton's 3rd.) What am I? 10 years ago I'd have had an answer, since then ... Not sure. But I'm broadly closer to one of the three shores than the other two.
