I am not a religious man. Not a Christian, though brought up as one.
It occurs to me that if god was going to send Jesus back to earth like they all say hes going to, considering everything thats gone on in the Middle East, (shit, maybe the world) this would be the week it happens.

(32,096 posts)60 million deaths in WW II, civilian and military. The war lasted about 6 years. Which means around an average of 30,000 people died every single day in WW II.

(168 posts)100 years ago in the Battle of Verdun, France, 1,000,000 died in a battle that lasted 10 months and moved the line five miles. One million men and women. The poison gas is.still seeping.from the ground. It will be 500 years before they.can use the land again. This is bad, but not that bad.

(65,230 posts)...I have concerns about some details.
Phosgene reacts readily with water to for CO2 and HCl. It's not a fast reaction, but we're talking about over 100 years.
100 years of rain make it extremely unlikely that there is still phosgene being emitted from the ground. Besides, any that percolate down would not exert the vapor pressure to get it to rise to the surface, counter to gravity & fluid resistance.
Finally, as I've actually done it the lab, reasonably high concentrations of phosgene gas can be neutralized in a weak potassium hydroxide solution.
Better yet, for agriculture would be to use lime suspended in water. That would form calcium chloride, CO2, & some water.
It would take nowhere near 500 years to remediate that land if it were actually necessary.
The details don't make technical sense, though I agree that the conditions during that battle were horrific.

(4,569 posts)buried & "unexploded" shells/canisters(?). Same could apply to chlorine I suppose. OTOH, maybe both were not distributed by canister...

(65,230 posts)By the time they switched from chlorine, they had developed the exploding gas shells.
Could there have been duds? Sure.
But, an unexploded shell leaking through would be doing so very slowly, in order for it have lasted 10 years, let alone a hundred. And, the smaller the amount of total phosgene mass decreases the ratio of it to water. That speeds up the reaction a bit.
Chlorine is actually less likely. There are LOTS of organic compounds in soil, including some acids (e.g.- formic acid, which comes from worm secretions & some insects, notably ants). Free chlorine contacting organic compounds with a carbonyl group is a rapid reaction. There's no way it leaks for 100 years and is still contaminating the soil.

(4,569 posts)the shells started leaking, no? Anyhow, I agree with the general premise that significant effects after 100 years are unlikely.

(25,495 posts)There have been dozens of wars and other conflicts that have dwarfed the present conflict. This is a blip on the radar compared to either world war, Holodomor, Cambodia, Rwanda, or Armenia, just to name a few. I have to question the historical perspective of assertions like that.
That being said, I suspect your comment might have been sarcasm, though it's often difficult to discern in text form.

Right now and for several years, hundreds of Muslims have been reporting dreams or even occasionally a physical encounter of meeting Jesus. They inevitably put their hatreds aside and leave Islam... also many such videos on YouTube!
