Not speaking of DU, but a lot of social media today has seemed rather disrespectful/dismissive towards Feinstein and ageist in general, with many people complaining about her dying in office. While there is a reasonable debate to be had about age limits for politicians, and even I came around to supporting her resignation (and McConnells), it just seems tacky to me for people to make this issue the whole discussion about her life and legacy. Anybody else feel the same way?

(268 posts)As they say in baseball, youre only as good as your last at-bat. But her lifetime average is very good.

(9,402 posts)She was a great public servant. I remember hearing announce live that Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk had been killed and the perp was Supervisor Dan White. It was a shocking announcement and the reaction from the onlookers was startling. But she did great work. I heard Jane Harmon say this morning that one of the last things she wanted was, I think, meetings to form policy. Harmon said the DiFi meetings will go forward.

(1,685 posts)This is the type of post that diminishes the public's reaction, and its ability to properly respond, to REAL misogyny. We need her replaced quickly not because she is a woman, but because the good of the nation requires that a quick replacement happens. And deep down, you know that.
I respect her, and her decades of great public service, but that does not minimize the need for her to be replaced by another Democrat sometime very soon.

(102,421 posts)I can never remember a time in my life when so many seem to wield their extreme ageism, sexism, and total lack of compassion for those suffering serious health conditions, dementia, or mental health issues--regardless of age--as a cudgel.
Diane Feinstein had a remarkable career and left a major legacy for women in politics--especially the Senate. If only those who don't know her history would take time to learn. And for those intensely angry at her for not vacating her seat earlier, you may one day hear the truth--that she did so to protect the Dems in the Senate who would NOT be able to fill her committee appointments--including Judiciary, had she left. Believe it or not, but the history of this woman underscores that this is the truth.

(16,370 posts)Who is gonna replace her bets are going on. On here, too. We should be celebrating her life, her dedication to public service, her commitment to equal rights and gun control. She cant be replaced and weve lost a real fighter who fought the good fight to the end. Literally.

(4,442 posts)However, the news stories about her passing seemed quite laudatory and informative of her political history---
(I had forgotten, if I had known, about how the assassination of Harvey Milk and the Mayor led to her becoming Mayor of San Francisco, which led to her becoming U.S. Senator from CA)
Rest in Peace, Senator Feinstein.... You served us right to the end.
