Texas sends 15th bus of asylum seekers to Los Angeles. It's the second in four days

A group of 45 migrants who reached Los Angeles Friday morning are the second to arrive by bus from Texas in four days.

Mayor Karen Bass’ office confirmed that the group of asylum seekers marks the 15th to arrive in L.A. since the first bus arrived in June.

The bus that arrived Friday pulled into Union Station shortly after 9:30 a.m. after leaving Texas around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, according to L.A. Welcomes Collective, a group of immigration advocates, faith-based organizers and city and county officials. The group of asylum seekers, which includes 13 families and 23 children, traveled from Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

On Tuesday, 40 asylum seekers from Venezuela and El Salvador arrived in Union Station, the L.A. Welcomes Collective said.

He's sending them here because of that whole "fuck you" to sanctuary cities thing. I'm really surprised Newsom isn't denouncing this crap. I think Abbott's anti-immigrant hysteria should be considered some kind of disorder.

The immigrants are happier and better off in CA.

California has public policies that can only be interpreted as being open and welcoming to immigrants. It adds to the diversity of culture here and provides more workers for our bustling economy that seems to have positions to fill.

I understand the reasons for the bus trips are rooted in Texas bigotry, but the results seem to be all positive.

Any bus that isn't a school bus is regulated by the ICC and has to be licensed to operate in any state it enters. Plus, the agricultural check stations could serve to identify them since the CHP is also there. Should be the way to do it, you can't enter the state without going through a "bug station". All commercial vehicles, including chartered buses are regulated so if government entities like the ICC and DOJ should be doing something about this.

Is there some problem with immigrants?

I know Texas and Florida don't want them, but most of us here in non-racist blue states do.

10,000 migrants crossed into Eagle Pass, Texas in the last three DAYS. The population of Eagle Pass, Texas is 28,000 people.

In 2022, 2 MILLION people crossed the southern border. 1.2 MILLION of them crossed into Texas. Plenty of migrants stay in Texas. I am a retired public school teacher and my classes were always full of ESL learners and recent immigrant kids. Trust me, Texas is already doing more than its fair share, and it is absolutely crazy to me that the moment a few busloads of migrants show up in a blue state and suddenly the problem is visible in other places and it's not just poor Eagle Pass with its 28,000 citizens asked to deal with 10,000 people crossing in three days, and other cities and states are asked to start doing their fair share, the conversation becomes how Texas and Florida must be racist because they don't want the migrants.

Immigration needs to be a NATIONAL ISSUE. If our values are that we want the borders to be open the way that they are now due to political and economic problems in the countries these people are coming from, then FINE. But that means that the 2 million people streaming into the country every year (last year, this year, next year and every year to come) will need to be spread out over all 50 states. We as democrats don't get to talk out of both sides of our mouths on this. We don't get to say we support immigrants as long as we never have to look at one or have one in our kids' school. Democrats don't get to say we love immigration as long as all the immigrants stay in Texas. That's not how it works, folks. If our values say we let these people continue to come in at a rate of 2 MILLION people per year, then they are going have to be spread out to all the states. Or we change our policy. It's silly to keep having a NIMBY tantrum over the busses. Abbott shouldn't have to keep footing the bill for the busses. Biden should be providing the busses to send the migrants across the country as soon as they cross the border.

Much more humane yet still not the best for them. That they are used as political pawns is the problem and something needs to happen in that regard.

On the positive side, the immigrants will get better help anywhere other than Texas or Florida.
Also, it has been an effective way to get the point across. Being a border state must be taxing and the whole country could be helping out. That said, again, he is a dick. Could there be a kinder more regulated way to spread the burden of refugees? This is only going to get worse. And we must be mindful, Americans may also need refuge someday because of climate destruction. Karma is a bitch.

The state can still refuse to allow them in. There is a way to stop this legally and it doesn't seem there is much effort in that direction.

There are laws about transporting people across state lines in the ICC regulations and if the migrants are not sure where they are going and were lied to, there should be a legal case.

Sep 2023

You send an asylum seeker to L.A. on the 20th when s/he has a hearing in, say, Chicago sometimes in early October (because that's where their relatives/sponsor are), and that court date is getting missed.

They're being told they're going to someplace where there's jobs, housing, and people to take care of them. However, whomever was in charge of making sure they made their court date has now lost track of them, and who knows how much the seeker understands about the process they need to go through to get back into the system and make their court date. Especially since the only reason they came up was to be safe and work, and that's what's on their minds, not standing before a judge with someone from legal aid to walk them through the hoops.

No matter what, if the asylum seeker misses a court date, s/he is now an undocumented criminal.

About 3,000 migrants crossed into Eagle Pass on Wednesday and another 3,000 are on track to enter Thursday, said U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzalez, who represents the city in Congress. He said the Border Patrol estimates that by Friday, 10,000 migrants will have entered Eagle Pass in a week.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/migrants-overwhelm-texas-city-of-eagle-pass/ar-AA1h3nQf

This is one entrance - there are others. 45 migrants to Cal is a drop in a 50 gallon bucket. We need to stop sanctions on Venezuela (esp oil sanctions) or this will never end till half of Venezuela travels here during the coming years.

Texas has been dealing with this for years and in much higher numbers. Suddenly a few busses of migrants show up in a blue city and those mayors are getting out the smelling salts. While for years everyone has ignored the news stories of tiny Texas towns of 3,000 people where thousands of migrants would be camped out underneath their bridges, begging in their neighborhoods, desperate and thirsty and hungry.

Abbott and Desantis are awful. No question. But on this, they are not entirely wrong.

If we as a nation support letting these people in (and we as DEMOCRATS support letting them in), then that means we have to support them! We have to stop talking out of both sides of our mouths. 2 MILLION people crossed the southern border in 2022. 1.5 million of them crossed through Texas.

Not only should there be busses waiting to take those 2 million people to cities all across the nation, but BIDEN should be paying for the busses. Abbott should not have to do it, folks. I'll say it one more time for the kids at the back of the class: it is not the responsibility of the southern border states to deal with the 2 million migrants who come through each year. If we want those people to stay, we ALL have to support them. That means they come to YOUR community, your schools, your backyard. So Eric Adams. needs to shut his mouth with all this "they're going to destroy New York City" crap. Either we are all together on this and we are going to support these 2 million people, and the 2 million we will receive this year, and the 2 million we will receive next year and the next and the next, or we make policy changes.

But the answer ISN'T that we say "I support migrants as long as I never have to look at one."

Or "I call myself a democrat and I say I support migrants as long as Texas has to do the dirty work and keep all the migrants in their state."

Either we support these people and want to help them or we don't. But that has to be a solution all the states are in on. I'll say it again. Quit being mad at Abbott for the busses. Joe Biden should be providing the busses.

Sep 2023

In 2022, 2 million migrants crossed the border.

1.2 into Texas
500K into Arizona
140K into New Mexico
250K into California

2023 will see as many OR MORE.

Democrats need to stop talking out of both sides of our mouths on this issue. Either we support migrants and want the border to remain open as it is now or we support policy change. If our democratic values say that we want to support these people who are fleeing political violence in the countries they are coming from, ALL STATES must be prepared to receive the 2 MILLION MIGRANTS that come across the border EVERY YEAR.

It is not the job of the four southern border states to deal with this simply because they are next to the border. Democrats need to shut up with this snotty NIMBYism and saying the bussing is the problem. If we are CHOOSING to let these people into the country, then that's it! We now have made the decision to let them in! We now have to support them! And by "support them" this doesn't mean hide them in Texas where the problem is invisible to some ultra progressive voter living in a coastal state who thinks it's great to say "I support migrants as long as I never have to look at one." If our democratic values mean that we are letting these people in, every single state will have to take migrants. And MORE migrants. Every week. Every month. Or we adjust how many people we let in. That is the other option. But we can't talk both sides of our mouths. I am no Greg Abbott fan, but in this case, he is not completely wrong.

Europe is seeing millions of Climate refugees, because that's a huge cause of the political instability in North/Central Africa and the Middle East.
Areas of Central and South America have the same issues.

But Republicans and other "Nationalists" have been sitting on their hands for the past 40 years concerning both climate change and the predicted rise in refugees from developing countries that remain poor due to resources and economic exploitation. It's really easy to make a quick buck cheating your labor and flooding markets for profit. It's harder and takes longer to develop and nurture a strong economic trading partners and sustainable markets.

We (the collective) allowed greedy rich f***ers to bully their way into playing zero-sum Masters of the Universe. Now we all are going to pay for it. And rich f***ers will be the last to realize one just can't buy their way out of the death cult their game of unregulated "free trade" capitalism becomes. The tighter they try to hold on to their rich and selfish lifestyle, the more it falls apart.

It's Guillotines for everyone, the guilty and innocent alike.
