The looming impeachment has a grander purpose

Noah Berlatsky writes:

Republicans have openly admitted that their efforts to impeach President Joe Biden — which will begin in earnest this week as House members return to DC from summer break — are in bad faith. They don’t just want to tarnish Biden. They want to tarnish the impeachment process itself.

As the GOP has become increasingly authoritarian and anti-democracy, Republicans have become increasingly committed to undermining and mocking forms of democratic accountability. A nakedly partisan and clownish impeachment is useful because it signals to voters that all impeachments are clown shows, and all impeachments are partisan. That exculpates former President Donald Trump and delegitimizes resistance to him should he win the presidency again.

It’s absolutely the case that they are doing this for Trump because he has demanded it. That goes without saying. But since they are all bent on destroying democracy and the constitutional order, de-legitimizing the impeachment process is a no brainer. If they have the power (meaning a 2/3 Senate majority) they will remove any Democratic president for whatever trumped up charges they come up with. If they don’t have the power they will use it as yet another of their patented performance art projects. Impeachment will be devalued so that even if Democrats have the evidence and the power to remove, it will be seen as illegitimate. Win win for the bad guys.

Remember what he was supposed to be investigating? I don’t really remember either. Some thing about a real estate deal. But oh joy, they discovered a sex scandal. They are hoping to dig up something dirty in Joe Biden’s past. The fact that it isn’t there doesn’t bother them a bit. The thing about Republicans is not only do they always do the wrong thing, they do it with such a sense of self righteousness. Remember Tara Reade, anybody who knew Joe Biden knew that was a lie. Now she has defected to Russia, what a surprise. The Republicans had all this information on Hunter before the election, and they still lost. They’re just re-hashing the same bullshit

It's the illusion of impeachable offenses that counts. They're plan is to get voters to believe that President Biden is corrupt for two reasons.
One is to tarnish his image with voters, the other is to draw attention away from the actual criminal activities of Trump.

This is their political platform. In lieu of any real plan of governance., they embrace character assassination and projection of their faults onto Democrats.
The last thing Republicans want is for voters to know what they actually stand for, and what they actually plan to do once they gain full control of the Federal Government.

Magats can't defends what Trump has done, so they need to bring President Biden down to Trump's level.

At election time Magats can say that both were impeached, there is no difference between them.

They started that with Bill Clinton as a kind of insurance policy for W because it wasn't good for the country. And many policies and laws have effectively been undermined in the same way, for quite some time.

Not only that, all work in Congress comes to a screeching halt while the process is ongoing.

They're planning to shut the government down in one way or another, be prepared.

What was stupid was them not voting to remove Trump from office and diqualifying him from running again. That was their last chance to keep their party from imploding and they know it.
