When I had my passport renewed last year, the person taking my photo told me to smile and urged me to smile even more. I was surprised. What I do wonder about the mug shots is the lighting. Usually it's front lit, but these are done with side lighting that shows shadows. More for portraiture than mug shots.

These are the most non mugshot like mugshots I've ever seen- almost like they were created by AI.

Or wear glasses.

Right from the Department of State website: "With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open."

The public relations strategy is to manipulate everything to your own advantage. Even something as shameful as arrest (or in any other crisis).

Right-wing mindf*ck, it’s a political/public relations reality. A serious one. People get paid big bucks for this malevolence.

Edit: Once upon a time, it was a cultural norm not to photograph/record smiling mugshots. It was unthinkable. Funny how effective Tom was…

The reason for mug shots is to identify the person. They are identifiable either if they smile or if they don't.

Smiling or making "intimidating" faces like Trump did during his booking photo were not tolerated when I was a police officer. Trump has no respect for anyone but himself and a dollar bill. Making faces distorts the suspect's facial identity, therefore they could not be as useful for witness identity down the road. Criminals are aware of this, that is why they try not to pose naturally sometimes. In that vein, Trump tried to scam the system again. However, in his case it hardly matters because who else has an ass bigger than NY, weighs over 275 lbs, three chins, multiple comb overs, orange hair with a pound of bobby pins, orange face mixed with ruddy complexion, etc, etc.

When they process you into prison, they will, in many prisons, take photos of tatoos and any identifying marks like birth marks. It's more detailed than these booking photos.

Or maybe it's just jurisdictional?

Never been arrested or in prison, so don't know.
