(42,779 posts)She's there for one reason and one reason only -- to fulfill the requirement of the local rules that Nauta have, as part of his legal team, a local attorney who has been admitted to practice before the Southern District of Florida. She checks that box. Her first task: file the motion obtaining "pro hac vice" status for Nauta's principal attorney, Stanley Woodward, who is an accomplished criminal attorney who has been representing Nauta throughout the Special Counsel's investigation.
How little is required of Dadan? It was Woodward, not Dadan, who spoke on behalf of Nauta in entering his not guilty plea during the arraignment.

Or ditch her half the way through to try and stall to seek a better one.

(42,779 posts)As has been explained before, she's part of the team only because the local rules require a local attorney who previously was admitted to practice before the Southern District of Florida to be co-counsel with the out-of-state attorney who actually will be providing the substantive legal counsel.

(42,779 posts)Yes, Nauta hired Sasha Dadan to be his local counsel. But that's only because the local rules require he have a lawyer admitted to practice before the Southern District of Florida on his team. But she isn't going to be providing any substantive legal counsel. She'll co-sign pleadings and she will be the one to access the court's electronic filings. Most importantly, she will file a motion that will allow the accomplished attorney who has been representing Nauta in the investigation, Stanley Woodward, to participate in the case "pro hac vice."
In fact, although you wouldn't know it from the Raw Story article (of course), it was Woodward, not Dadan who entered Nauta's guilty plea on his behalf.

(17,339 posts)I never read rawsory, and am not sure why anyone would. But that's just me.
There have been a number of retired federal prosecutors interviewed who have explained exactly what you are saying since the guy was in court. In fact, a number explained before that Woodward only needed a co-counsel who could serve on record, distinct from actually running the defense. Considering Dadan's interest in politics, this may be of interest to her to serve as a side-kick, not so much for the added experience, but for her next run for office.

(51,155 posts)when you go to it there is misdirection. I had to scroll all the way back up to the top to find the story.
I don't care for sites that have multiple stories on one page.

(42,779 posts)Errors of omission -- it fails to acknowledge what her role will be (limited) and that his actual, substantive legal counsel will be provided by Stanley Woodward, an accomplished criminal lawyer who has been representing Nauta during the Special Counsel's investigation. It was Woodward, not Dadan, that spoke on behalf of Nauta in entering his not guilty plea.

(2,025 posts)Amazing how people make fun of what they dont understand. Ex-PD is a good start for any defense attorney. She is undoubtedly competent. She likely may not have ANY experience in cases of this magnitude, but if thats who he can get, thats fine. PDs are used to learning new stuff.
As for the Barbie doll Twitter ad, its hilarious. Its perfect for people who get into DUIs, routine robberies, drug charges, whatever. Dont look for reasons to drag her that arent there.

(73,634 posts)Thank you for this.
Quite often -- i9n my opinion, which is worth no more or less than anyone else's -- people take a negative approach to defense lawyers who represent the more toxic of defendents. I ave had numerous friend ask, "How could she/he defend this person?" when it comes, for example, to murderers.
The answer is that is their job. They have loyalty to the legal system. It's not just that every person has the right to a defense, including scum of the earth. But their defense lawyer/team has an obligation to make the prosecutoe prove their client's guilt. As others have noted on DU recently, the best prosecutors hope the accused has talented representation.
I know very little about this lawyer. And nothing negative, at all.
