I gotta say... I'm enjoying the Twitter meltdown today.

I'm sure others have already posted this, but Twitter had a bill due for cloud (hosting?) services yesterday, which apparently they (Elon) didn't pay.

They didn't pay their bill yesterday & today the site is going down in flames. None of the basic functionality is working for me, & apparently, millions of others.

As y'all probably know I've used Twitter as a primary source (accounts I've vetted & trust) for quite a while now, but after seeing how Elmo has fkkd over employees & service providers, I feel like he's experiencing his just rewards.

Edit to add:
'Elon Musk didn't pay the bill': Twitter users slam billionaire amid global outage

Twitter's billionaire owner's cost-cutting measures have come under fire from its users with the social media platform showing no sign of recovery from the outage

and the vendor can immediately halt the service, it behooves the business to quickly restore service by paying up to date. If Twitter can’t pay its bills it’s not going to be around much longer unless Musk sells at a big loss.

Boulder landlord succeeds in evicting Twitter over unpaid rent
A judge for Boulder County’s district court permitted law enforcement to evict the tenant on May 31

while I read through a couple of Twitter lists I have that I regularly check out, though many of the folks who tweeted were reporting and complaining, more out of bemusement that anything else, about having hit their limits (albeit none seem to have been limited for long), but then I tend not to check out Musk fanboys' ravings and the folks I check out are pretty inured to Musk's nonsense and just want to get on with things.

I don't use the personalized Twitter feed as such, but the "Explore" tabs for my account are full of topics like Reddit, Elon Musk, So Twitter, Twatter, Temporary, #RateLimitExceeded, #RIPTwitter, Bluesky, Tumblr, Discord, MySpace, Space Karen, Insta, Elon, Zuckerberg, Spoutible, Hive, Google Cloud etc.

Some folks involved with severe weather warnings are rightly pissed as it's a potentially dangerous situation. Others are wondering what Twitter's advertisers are thinking about Musk limiting their paid-for exposure.

I'll browse on until I hit my own limit, assuming that will happen (I'd guess I've looked at or scrolled past something near 600 tweets so far). I'll be marginally interested to see the reaction from the crowd for whom Musk can usually do no wrong, but I won't waste too much time on it as I want to see what's going on in Ukraine and how it's affecting those accounts.

I swear I can’t figure him out. The initial scramble to come up with an excuse, the backpedal and the reveal are just nuts. And he does that kind of thing a lot. Thank goodness he doesn’t have a more dangerous toy to destroy!

July 1 (Reuters) - Twitter is limiting how many tweets per day various accounts can read, to discourage "extreme levels" of data scraping and system manipulation, Executive Chair Elon Musk said in a post on the social media platform on Saturday.

Verified accounts were initially limited to reading 6,000 posts a day, Musk said, adding that unverified accounts will be limited to 600 posts a day with new unverified accounts limited to 300.

……

Musk had said that hundreds of organizations or more were scraping Twitter data "extremely aggressively", impacting user experience.

Musk had earlier expressed displeasure with artificial intelligence firms like OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, for using Twitter's data to train their large language models.

Twitter was down for thousands of users on Saturday morning, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

And your employees stop showing up for work if they're not getting paid. That's why you pay bills. But hey! According to some, even here at DU, Elmo is a genius! I'm sure he'll figure out how to run twitter on air and sunshine.
