I cant tell you how grateful I am that we dont live close. I dont talk on the phone for more than a minute when they call. Im afraid they or I would say something political and I wouldnt be able to hold my tongue. His daughter is an RN, married to an anesthesiologist- doing very well financially.

an opportunity provided by the extreme results of Dobbs.
Most people in this country, including a chunk of Republicans, support the right to abortion and are very disturbed by the overthrow of Roe after 50 years.
Pregnancy is dangerous, and every day there are disastrous pregnancies that threaten the lives of living women who have heartbeats of their own. Every day there are couples trying hard to get pregnant by IVF and part of that process involves the destruction of fertilized eggs. Every day there are women who miscarry and need a D&C or mifepristone.
People who think of themselves as pro-life have not had to contemplate these hazards as anything but events needing medical care, nor consider them as abortion for 50 years. Now they do, because the SCOTUS and pig-ignorant state legislators have defined it as such.
Time to rub peoples noses in this reality. Time to make it explicitly clear what the fanatics have wrought. Its all well and good to visualize perfect little Gerber Babies and get gooey about being pro-life. But confront women and their partners with the reality of the events I mentioned, and the picture changes radically. Then they get it its medical care.
P.S. Please dont make this an opportunity for blaming white women okay?

(18,886 posts)is a devout Mormon. Mormon women are brainwashed from birth to be second to men. They can't get into heaven accept as a wife and mother. It's complicated.
ShazzieB
(16,806 posts)I don't live in Utah, but it's my understanding that it's a very red state, which means most people there vote Republican. There's nothing I or anyone else here could say that would change that.
Utah is also heavily Mormon. Marie Osmond is probably one of the most famous people in Utah and one of the most famous Mormons in the U.S., if not the world. It's hardly surprising that people in her state, most of whom are Mormons, would be interested in the opinions of someone who is both a native daughter of their state and a fellow Mormon.
There's nothing I can do about any of this. Not my circus, not my monkeys, lol. (And no, I am NOT calling Mormons monkeys or comparing them in any way! It's a figure of speech meaning that this is a matter completely outside my purview.)
Tree Lady
(11,576 posts)votes that way because she believes in some part of their issues, whether they have money and its low taxes, religion, abortion, immigration etc. Women are just like men that way. I don't know any who vote R just because someone else told them to.
They could be brainwashed into the cult but that is the same as men.

(7,793 posts)like White men are racist but considering the obvious support for sexual suppression by the GOP since at least 1980 (I think both parties we about equally strongly sexually oppressive prior).
I think those that continue to support the GOP fall into two categories - favor white supremacy because it provides them hope of a superior class status or because they are simply racist , although not admittedly so. The fact is that the majority of white women have only voted twice for Democrats since the 50's - '52 and '56. So this is not new.
I am just hoping at some point that women of the US unite against oppression of all kinds (religious, political, economic) at some point and lead the way to a better life in the US. We need them more than ever these days.
It is clear that White men need some feminine persuasion on the matter!!

(16,188 posts)I'm related to a lot of them.
Several of them think pregnancy is a death pact...mostly because it has never endangered their lives or those of their daughters.
Their stated belief that people who have pregnancy problems are being punished by "god".
They also believe that anyone who has an abortion at any point in pregnancy is going to hell.
So, no. I don't feel bad for them. They are making their own choices and trying to choose for everyone else too.
