the seriousness and reality of the Trump crimes?
Not sure I have the answers, but would love to hear the opinion of cult de-programmers.
Why hasn't anyone in the media or tv opinion shows interviewed a cult de-programmer on the Trumpy Cult?
How do we get those folks back into a reality-based worldview?

(3,789 posts)...........you can't.
I have a good friend who is otherwise very intelligent and thoughtful, but he is a full-blown Trump Cult member. When I tried to appeal to his reasonableness, all I got was the ravings of a lunatic. He said he would vote for Trump even if he was in prison at the time of the election because him going to prison would only be proof of how corrupt the justice system in this country is. He literally told me that Trump is the most persecuted person in the history of this country.
There is literally no amount of evidence that will ever convince them that their cult leader isn't perfect in every way, and that everyone in this country is out to get him, including shadowy forces working behind the scenes that secretly control everything. Just look at that Jordan Klepper video from a while back where he showed people at a Trump rally video of Ivanka admitting under oath that she knew the election wasn't stolen, and the one woman's response was that it wasn't her and she had been cloned. You can't argue with that.
Just look at this case. There are PICTURES. There is VIDEO of his aides moving the boxes literally minutes after he received the call that they were coming to get the documents back. There is testimony of HIS OWN PEOPLE. He's ON TAPE admitting that he's guilty. None of it is enough to convince him that he's guilty. They just clap their hands over their ears, squeeze their eyes shut, and shout, "HILLARY DID IT TOO! BIDEN DID IT TOO! HE'S BEING PERSECUTED!!!"
It's a fool's errand to try to appeal to the common sense of people who have none.

strap 'em into chairs in a theater, toothpicks holding their glazed over eyes open, forcing them to watch hundreds of hours of rachel maddow, thom hartmann, john fugelsang and stephanie miller podcasts while listening to a little bit of the ludwig van.

The leader dying can be it - that SO. Cal. cult about the Hale Bopp comet. Whatever they were saying, the would not go on without him.

(45,619 posts)I get what everyone is saying about not reaching fanatics. I'm more concerned with the other non-radicalized Republicans.
They still support Trumpy or someone just like him.
20 years ago, they were all strong national defense. Now they are making excuses for a disgraced former President mishandling classified documents or worse. GOP?
We really need professional cult de-programmers to weigh-in. What can be done?

(1,204 posts)Domination is the art of flipping around someone's natural self-preservation reaction to harmful stimuli.
It turns out that with enough repetition, you can train people to beg for abuse.
That has always been the function of Trump's outrageous behavior. And why it must always get more and more outrageous.
37% of Americans are too dumb to understand this, or that they are the victims of it. Write them off. They won't live forever.

(5,563 posts)Trump and other rightwing bullshit peddlers give them hope that there is a way to build the rightwing monoculture society they want.
Cutting them loose from the lies won't make them accepting of a moderate to progressive leaning, multicultural society. It might cause them to choose to more violent and radical methods.
Remember, Trump did not create his radical base - they were already there and he simply gave them focus and motivation.
The biggest lie in politics today is that radical change is possible. The electorate overall is short sighted, fickle, apathetic, and afraid of change. Believing that lie might be the only thing that keeps the worst of the fringes from coming fully unhinged.
