DeSantis' lawyers were forced by the court to define "woke." The lead lawyer described it as "The belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." https://t.co/O5HGJuJIay

(4,311 posts)The definition of "Woke" released by the lead lawyer is fairly accurate but very poorly phrased.

(36,142 posts)they know that's what all this "Florida is where woke comes to die" shit is about.
It's the DeSatan white supremacy dog whistle, and some judge had better figure that out.

White supremacists have taken over the Republican Party. Recently, all the Republicans on a committeee refused to approve a condemnation of white supremacy. This was no accident. The modern Republican Party is like something I read about in biology class long ago, a circumstance in which a wasp somehow overcomes a caterpillar and wounds it and lays eggs inside, which gradually grow by consuming the caterpillar until it is only a shell of its former self.

(4,878 posts)Could it be that the lawyers are saying exactly what DeSantis believes. They disagree that there are systemic injustices and policies addressing them are unnecessary. Worse, they delude themselves into believing that addressing those injustices is an injustice itself

(53,918 posts)It's simple truth that there are systemic injustices in society that need to be addressed.
Duh!
This is going to be an albatross around DeSantis' neck during the campaign and debates especially.

It will be taught that during slavery times and thereafter, it was against the law to teach Blacks how to read. But that did not stop them from learning.

(17,989 posts)They don't mind injustice. In fact, they thrive on it. Gets them elected. That's exactly what their base wants to bring back. First half of the 20th century injustice, because in that world, white people don't have to compete equitably with everyone else. They expect a certain level of deference simply for winning the birth lottery. Something justice and tolerance doesn't allow. The heart of the maga right in my mind.

- Ron DeathSentence -- because of all the thousands who died needlessly during the pandemic (including my next-door neighbor)

Et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum
The list grows longer every day.

I, for one, am not going to click on each and every twit (into a private window with lots of blocking going on) just to get the complete story.
It's sort of like the NYT or any other news source just supplying a list of twits to get content. Loonie Musk must be xstatic.

Besides, you don't even have to click the links/tweets to get the relevant info.
I think Ronda Santis is proud of his denial of systemic injustice. And he obviously sees no need to address any such mythical injustice.
And how many Republicans will agree? Now that Ronda Santis lawyers have defined it for them?

(5,444 posts)Taking a common word and redefining it to mean whatever, then using it to confuse your audience.
Even better if you use a multi-word phrase and redefine that, even I can do this.
eg
Pre-Humanoid Life Form = anyone whose politics don't agree with mine, someone out to feather his own nest at the detriment of others, a nasty, cruel human being.
Evolved Life Form = anyone who has empathy, works for the general good of the people around him irrespective of political affiliation.
And then use abreviations to describe various people!
eg
Desantis? A real PHLF!
Biden? He is an ELF!
Result? Only your inner circle knows what you mean, others just got to wonder.
Fortunately for my sanity, the English language doesn't allow doing that, it breaks all linguistic standards.
'Woke' will always mean 'waking up from sleep' to me. Transitioning to consciousness, becoming aware of your environment.
And it's a good thing, helps to be woke if you walk at a traffic crossing or drive a car.

(14,496 posts)Republicans are always contending that the wealthy and corporations are treated unfairly and with prejudice due to regulations and taxes. That would make them woke to that belief, in contrast to liberals.
So therefore under their Woke Act, that common belief among Republicans would be illegal in Florida.

(16,541 posts)Systemic injustices...in American society? The horror! How dare anyone suggest that America the beautiful, home of the brave and land of the free, is not 100% perfect! (3,943 posts)OK
I looked up official definitions of systemic injustice since the DeSatan definition segways to that.
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/philosophy/article/systemic-and-structural-injustice-is-there-a-difference/15422EA9F2A48BD0E30825D8D24DA285
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/systemic-injustice
https://news.stanford.edu/2022/02/01/examining-systemic-racism-advancing-racial-equity/
So lets imagine a court case or something where it is proven. Maybe thats the next step. Prove it, then that will negate the DeSatan argument completely.

(50,566 posts)DeSantis position: Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. You have no bootstraps because you cant afford boots. If you somehow get boots I will cut the straps off. If someone opens a bootstrap replacement service we will put it out of business. If you find some belts and try to turn them into bootstraps I will put you in jail for stealing belts, even if you got a job and earned the money to buy them. If someone opens a school to teach people how to make bootstraps out of broken fan belts I will find a reason to put the teachers in prison. I will do everything I can think of to keep you from pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps, but youve got to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.
