A man in Florida died from a brain-eating amoeba that he may have contracted after he rinsed his sinuses with tap water, health officials said.
"You CANNOT be infected by drinking tap water, the Health Department emphasized in its statement.
The agency urged members of the public to use distilled or sterile water when they rinse their sinuses, a practice that typically involves neti pots. "Tap water should be boiled for at least 1 minute and cooled before sinus rinsing," the release said.
Symptoms of an N. fowleri infection include headaches, fever, nausea, loss of balance, disorientation, seizures and a stiff neck. The disease progresses quickly after symptoms start, and patients usually die within 18 days or less.

(4,044 posts)There are so many crazies here in FL that there has to be a common denominator.
FL water is awful, that is until you cross the state line and go into Georgia. That water tastes even worse to me.
We use the "zerowater" system for filtration. It totally works.

Tap water is not sterile, and all kinds of bugs and critters can be lurking around in it. Mucous membranes are permeable, particularly if the bacteria has a rowing crew built in.
There was a story last year or so of company in Oakland, CA making . . . something, and they decided to cheap out using tap water instead of spending money on distilled (my memory of what they were making is super fuzzy). Anyway, long story short, bacterial infections for everyone!
Boil your snot water.
