Then, when the next Repug oozes into office, they claim (and receive) credit for fixing the economy.

This has been true for as long as I’ve been politically conscious and no doubt much longer.

You can look it up in many, many sources, and Democrats will, and will make nicely researched charts like the one in the opening post, but Republicans will accept what their guy said on Fox, or on Twitter at face value, and never check any numbers, never provide concrete examples. If you ask them a specific question, like "In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, which party's Presidents have had more recessions, Democrats or Republicans?" they will shamelessly make up an answer, assuming reality matches what they want it to be. (Answer: Republican Presidents have about twice the number of recessions as Democratic Presidents, and all of the very worst ones.)

Check out

https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/national-deficit/

for further information.

The graph at the government site is more current. It has an additional year (2021-2022 FY) showing that the deficit declined even more than is displayed in the graph with a deficit of $1.38 T, about half of the last year shown in the original post above!!

The last time there was a budget surplus was during Clinton's presidency.

Folks at MSNBC (or CSPAN) should dedicate 5 minutes a telecast to topics from this link.

Everyone should know the facts.

and then talk about cutting spending but never do. Less income - as much or more out go = record deficits. It's simple math and the umpteenth repudiation of the "Laffer Curve". No theory has ever been more aptly named.

Notice that big spike in Obama's first year? That's the Iraq and Afghanistan debacles being put back into the budget where they belonged instead of "off budget" and hidden. W's numbers are grossly understated because of that fact. Republicans were playing fast and loose with the truth. Their usual game of 3 card Monty with their base. But their base keeps playing. Idiots.

was added on his watch. However, a large part of that was related to Covid. The chart makes it look like it was entirely caused by the tax cut. If I remember correctly, the cost of that was $1.6 trillion — over 10 years.

Tax cuts obviously contributed to the deficit under Trump, but nowhere near as much as the COVID relief, which was badly needed.

outbreaks to deal with but he had a team in place to deal with it immediately to stop the spread.
Trump fired that team and lied to everyone and covid spread so yes he is totally responsible for the debt incurred under his watch not to mention the deaths.

Most of the world shut down, and most governments engaged in measures to give financial support to their population. Trump could have dampened the impact, to be sure. I don’t believe he could have “totally” stopped the spread. To my knowledge, only New Zealand, and perhaps South Korea, came close to managing that.

And the graph does not mention covid at all.

if he hadn’t. The results would have been better, in all likelihood, but it is pure speculation about “what might have been.”
