He says that he's "Brazilian-American." Does he have a US birth certificate or naturalization document?

(25,987 posts)My assumption is that Santos is a citizen. But based on my reading of the available reporting theres no actual evidence that Santos was born in Queens or anywhere in the United States, other than Santoss say-so, which is obviously worth less than nothing. And theres at least some evidence Ms. Hurdass recollection that he told others he was born in Brazil.
This really is a case where show us the birth certificate (or naturalization papers) has legal merit. As the Constitution requires:
No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. Art. I Section 2 [emphasis added]
Given how Santos has been caught lying about his work record, his school record, his charities, his sexuality, and probably the direction where the sun rose this morning, it is entirely reasonable to ask where he was born (either in the US, or abroad as the child of a US citizen), or if he has been a naturalized citizen for at least 7 years. Should be simple enough to establish, right?

(32,823 posts)If he doesn't have one, then we need to know why.
Either he can't get one because he isn't a US citizen. (Ineligible to run for Congress)
Or maybe he has one but it's in a different name. (Why did he run under the name "George Santos" then?)
I don't understand why the media isn't running this down NOW!

(1,527 posts)The Constitution requires that Members of the House be at least 25 years old, have been a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state they represent (though not necessarily the same district).
Is George Santos a U.S. citizen and has he been a U.S. citizen for over 7 years?
Anyone know how to determine this about someone?
We know that he is over 25. We know that he lives in the state he is scheduled to represent. But, is he a citizen? And, has he been a citizen for over 7 years?
If I was running the NY Democratic Party (and the national party) I'd be finding out that key piece of information.
All the fraud and the incredible amount of lying about his life are somewhat meaningless. He can serve in Congress from a prison cell. The key is can he be prohibited from being a U.S. Congressional representative?
